Tinjauan Seismik

The Caribbean Netherlands — Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba — are three special municipalities of the Netherlands with strikingly different geological settings and seismic hazard profiles. Bonaire, the largest, is part of the Leeward Antilles ABC group, sitting near the Caribbean-South American plate boundary north of Venezuela; like Aruba and Curaçao, it is a Cretaceous oceanic plateau fragment with low to moderate seismic hazard from Venezuelan fault systems. Sint Eustatius and Saba, by contrast, are in the active volcanic arc of the Lesser Antilles, where the North American Plate subducts beneath the Caribbean Plate at roughly 2 centimetres per year. Sint Eustatius is built on older volcanic rocks (The Quill, a dormant stratovolcano) while Saba is one of the youngest and most actively volcanic islands in the northern arc, consisting almost entirely of the Mount Scenery stratovolcano rising 887 metres from the sea. Saba's seismicity is partly driven by [[subduction-zone]] processes and partly by the volcanic system of Mount Scenery, making it the most seismically active of the three islands.

The seismic history of the Caribbean Netherlands reflects the diverse settings of the three islands. Sint Eustatius and Saba have been shaken by numerous regional subduction earthquakes, including the 1843 Guadeloupe event (magnitude 8.0) and numerous M5–6 arc earthquakes over the past century. Saba, as an active volcanic island, has experienced volcanic-tectonic earthquake swarms associated with the activity of its geothermal system; monitoring of Mount Scenery is considered important for regional volcanic hazard assessment. Bonaire experiences occasional felt events from Venezuelan seismic sources, including earthquakes on the Oca-Ancón Fault system in northwestern Venezuela, which has generated M6–7 events historically. The 1900 Venezuelan coastal earthquake caused alarm in the ABC islands. [[tsunami]] exposure varies: Bonaire's southern location and Venezuelan proximity present some risk, while Sint Eustatius and Saba face [[tsunami]] hazard from the Lesser Antilles [[subduction-zone]] to the east.

The geological contrast within this small territory is remarkable. Bonaire's basement is Caribbean Large Igneous Province material — ancient oceanic basalt — overlain by Neogene carbonate and reef rock. Sint Eustatius consists of Oligocene to Miocene volcanic and sedimentary rocks dominated by The Quill, a well-preserved but dormant crater. Saba is almost entirely a late Quaternary stratovolcano with steep flanks, no coastal flat land, and an unusual road system etched into the volcanic slopes. Seismic monitoring for the Caribbean Netherlands is conducted under the coordination of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) and collaborating regional networks including the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre.

Pertanyaan yang Sering Diajukan

Caribbean Netherlands has a low level of seismic activity. Large earthquakes are infrequent but not impossible. A total of 0 earthquakes have been recorded in Caribbean Netherlands's seismic history.

Caribbean Netherlands has had 0 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.

Caribbean Netherlands is classified in the "Low" seismic zone, located in North America. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
