Tinjauan Seismik

Guyana sits entirely on the Guiana Shield — one of the most ancient and tectonically stable geological formations in the Western Hemisphere, composed of Archaean and Proterozoic rocks up to 3 billion years old. The country has virtually no indigenous seismicity from local fault activity; the Guiana Shield has not been significantly tectonically deformed since the Precambrian assembly of the South American continent and remains locked in geological quiescence. The primary seismic influence on Guyana comes from distant sources: the [[subduction-zone]] boundary between the Caribbean Plate and the South American Plate, which runs approximately 1,000 kilometres to the north along Venezuela's coast; the Andean subduction system to the west; and occasional events from the South American passive margin to the east. These distant events can transmit [[seismic-wave]]s through the rigid craton efficiently, occasionally producing felt motion in Georgetown and other coastal cities. The coastal strip of Guyana, lying below sea level in places and protected by a sea wall from the Atlantic, has theoretical [[tsunami]] exposure from Caribbean arc events but at much attenuated wave heights.

Guyana's documented earthquake history records occasional felt events from distant regional sources rather than locally generated damaging earthquakes. Events from the Venezuela-Trinidad seismic zone — including El Pilar Fault events — have been felt in Georgetown. The 2007 Martinique earthquake (magnitude 7.4) and the 2010 Haiti earthquake (magnitude 7.0) were felt across much of the Caribbean and northern South America, with reports of felt motion reaching Guyana. Large Andean subduction events from Ecuador or Peru occasionally produce weak felt shaking in western Guyana. No significant structural damage from seismic events has been documented in Guyana's capital or interior communities in modern times. Guyana participates in Caribbean disaster risk management frameworks but earthquake preparedness is a very low national priority given the absence of any significant historical seismic impact.

The Guiana Shield exposed in Guyana represents some of the oldest continental crust in the Western Hemisphere, with Archaean gneisses and granites dating to approximately 3.4 billion years old and younger Proterozoic greenstone belts, granites, and metamorphic sequences recording multiple episodes of Precambrian crustal growth. This ancient, cold, and internally rigid crustal block has remained essentially undeformed since the Proterozoic and shows no evidence of active faulting in the neotectonic record. The [[seismic-wave]] velocity through the Guiana Shield craton is among the highest of any continental crustal material, reflecting the low porosity and high density of the ancient crystalline basement. The coastal sedimentary plain — a belt of young Holocene and Pleistocene alluvial and marine deposits extending tens of kilometres inland from the Atlantic coast — represents the only geological environment in Guyana with potential for [[seismic-wave]] amplification, though the paucity of actual ground shaking makes this largely academic. The country is primarily at risk from flooding and sea-level events rather than seismic hazards.

Pertanyaan yang Sering Diajukan

Guyana has a low level of seismic activity. Large earthquakes are infrequent but not impossible. A total of 0 earthquakes have been recorded in Guyana's seismic history.

Guyana has had 0 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.

Guyana is classified in the "Low" seismic zone, located in South America. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
