Tinjauan Seismik
Honduras occupies a geologically complex zone where the Caribbean Plate, North American Plate, and influence of the Central American volcanic arc all intersect, producing a moderate but geographically uneven seismic hazard. The northern coastal zone of Honduras is bounded by the Swan Islands Fault — part of the same Motagua-Swan Islands transform system that separates the North American and Caribbean plates — and this zone is capable of hosting significant strike-slip earthquakes. The western highlands near the Guatemalan border are exposed to earthquakes from the Motagua and Polochic fault systems, while the Pacific coastal zone in the south faces moderate seismicity from the Middle America [[subduction-zone]] operating off El Salvador and Nicaragua. Central and eastern Honduras, underlain by relatively stable Precambrian and Paleozoic crystalline basement, experiences lower seismicity. The northern Sula Valley and Ulúa Valley are built on alluvial sediments that can amplify [[seismic-wave]]s during regional events.
The 28 May 2009 Honduras earthquake (magnitude 7.3) occurred on the Swan Islands Fault in the Caribbean Sea approximately 200 kilometres north of Tegucigalpa and generated a small [[tsunami]] that briefly threatened Caribbean coastal communities. The event caused panic and some structural damage in northern coastal towns. The 1915 Mosquitia earthquake (estimated magnitude 7.5) caused significant damage in northeastern Honduras. Events from the Guatemalan fault system — particularly the 1976 magnitude 7.5 Motagua Fault earthquake — caused felt shaking and damage in western Honduras. The major Atlantic hurricane and flood disasters of 1998 (Hurricane Mitch) have shaped Honduran disaster perception more than earthquakes, but the seismic record shows moderate earthquake exposure is real. The Pacific coastal zone has experienced several M6 events tied to offshore subduction activity.
Honduras's geological framework can be divided into the ancient Chortis Block — a fragment of Precambrian continental crust that forms the core of Central America — and the younger volcanic and sedimentary sequences deposited around it. The Chortis Block is geologically related to southern Mexico's Oaxacan crystalline basement and represents a piece of old continental crust that became entrained along the Caribbean-North American boundary during Cretaceous-Paleogene plate reorganisation. This ancient, cold crust transmits seismic energy efficiently over long distances, meaning earthquakes originating from the Guatemalan fault system or the Caribbean plate boundary can produce felt shaking across most of the country. The [[fault]] pattern in Honduras is dominated by northwest-trending structures parallel to the Caribbean-North American boundary and northeast-trending structures related to extensional tectonics in the back-arc region. Honduras's national COPECO agency coordinates disaster response including earthquake early warning dissemination from regional monitoring networks.

Pertanyaan yang Sering Diajukan
Honduras has a moderate level of seismic activity. Significant earthquakes occur periodically. A total of 0 earthquakes have been recorded in Honduras's seismic history.
Honduras has had 0 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.
Honduras is classified in the "Moderate" seismic zone, located in North America. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
