Tinjauan Seismik
Iceland is unique in the world as a country situated entirely on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge — the divergent boundary between the North American and Eurasian plates — exposed at the surface as a volcanic island. This extraordinary tectonic position means that Iceland experiences essentially continuous seismicity, combining tectonic earthquakes from spreading and transform motion with volcanic-tectonic events from magma movement beneath the island's numerous active volcanic systems. The country releases more seismic energy per unit area than anywhere else in Europe and is globally comparable to the most active zones on Earth.
The Mid-Atlantic Ridge crosses Iceland from the southwest (the Reykjanes Peninsula) to the northeast (the Northern Volcanic Zone), but the plate boundary is not a simple spreading center here — it has been offset laterally by two major transform fault zones: the South Iceland Seismic Zone (SISZ) in the southwest and the Tjörnes Fracture Zone (TFZ) in the north. These transform zones are responsible for Iceland's largest and most damaging earthquakes, generating major right-lateral strike-slip events on a series of left-stepping en-échelon [[fault]] segments. The South Iceland Seismic Zone in particular is one of the most seismically prolific zones in Europe, generating [[magnitude]] 6–7 earthquakes roughly every 80–100 years in large "doublet" sequences.
Iceland's seismic catalog, supplemented by medieval sagas and ecclesiastical records, extends back to the early settlement of the island (874 AD). Major historical SISZ events include the 1630 (M ~7.0), 1784 (M ~7.1), and 1896 (M ~7.0) sequence — the last of which occurred as six major shocks within 13 days, destroying most farmsteads across southern Iceland. The 1912 TFZ earthquake (M ~7.0) in the north ruptured the Húsavík–Flatey Fault and was felt across the entire country. In 2000, the SISZ produced two M 6.5 earthquakes on June 17 and June 21, causing extensive damage to farms and infrastructure in southern Iceland, with ruptures observed at the surface as near-vertical right-lateral [[fault]] planes. In 2008, a M 6.3 earthquake in the same zone occurred within the developing Eyjafjallajökull volcanic episode. The 2021 Reykjanes eruption-earthquake sequence, culminating in the Fagradalsfjall eruptions, demonstrated the intimate link between magmatic intrusion and [[epicenter|earthquake]] generation in Iceland's volcanic rift zones.
Volcanic-tectonic seismicity adds another layer of complexity. Whenever magma moves beneath Iceland's volcanic systems — Hekla, Katla, Grímsvötn, Bárðarbunga, Krafla, and others — swarms of small to moderate earthquakes track the intrusion of magma into dikes and sill networks. The 1975–1984 Krafla Fires and the 2014–2015 Bárðarbunga eruption both generated intense earthquake swarms detectable globally. These volcanic earthquakes rarely reach [[magnitude]] 6, but their sheer numbers and the shallow depth of [[seismic-wave|seismic]] sources can cause significant ground shaking over extended periods. In September 2024, the Reykjanes Peninsula entered a new phase of intense eruptive and seismic activity, with the Svartsengi volcanic system producing multiple eruptions and thousands of earthquakes, forcing repeated evacuations of the town of Grindavík.
Iceland's tectonic framework involves the interaction of two diverging plates at approximately 18–20 mm/year total spreading rate, plus the influence of a deep mantle plume (the Iceland Hotspot) that supplies anomalously large volumes of magma to the surface. The plume causes Iceland to stand 2–3 km above what would be expected for a mid-ocean ridge alone, and the excess magma production fuels the island's prolific volcanism. The combination of transform faulting (generating large tectonic earthquakes), rift spreading (generating volcanic-tectonic swarms), and deep plume magmatism creates a [[seismic-wave|seismic]] environment of extraordinary complexity. Iceland operates one of the world's densest seismic monitoring networks relative to its land area, managed by the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) and the University of Iceland Earth Sciences Institute. The country's sparse population outside the Reykjavik metropolitan area limits casualties, but infrastructure (roads, geothermal plants, farms, tourism facilities) faces ongoing seismic and volcanic risk.

Pertanyaan yang Sering Diajukan
Iceland has a moderate level of seismic activity. Significant earthquakes occur periodically. A total of 3 earthquakes have been recorded in Iceland's seismic history.
The largest recorded earthquake in Iceland had a magnitude of 5.3. Earthquakes of this size can cause significant damage depending on depth, location, and local building standards.
Iceland has had 3 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.
Iceland is classified in the "Moderate" seismic zone, located in Europe. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
