The island's seismicity is a combination of subduction interface earthquakes, intraslab earthquakes within the descending slab, and volcano-tectonic earthquakes generated by magma movement and hydrothermal activity beneath Pelée and the Pitons du Carbet volcanic complex. Seismic hazard is rated very high.
Martinique's earthquake history includes one of the most destructive earthquakes in Caribbean history. On 11 January 1839, a large earthquake — estimated [[magnitude]] 7.5 — struck close to the capital Fort-de-France (then Saint-Pierre), killing approximately 300 people and destroying most of the town's masonry buildings. The event was felt throughout the Lesser Antilles. The 1843 Guadeloupe earthquake (estimated M8.0) caused additional damage across Martinique, which lies immediately south of the [[epicenter]] zone. In the modern era, the 29 November 2007 earthquake (magnitude 7.4) struck offshore Martinique in the subduction zone, producing the largest instrumented earthquake in the Lesser Antilles in recent decades; the event was felt strongly across the arc and caused minor structural damage on the island but no deaths. Volcanic-tectonic seismicity beneath Mount Pelée is monitored continuously; the 1902 catastrophic eruption, which killed approximately 29,000 people and destroyed the city of Saint-Pierre, was preceded by weeks of escalating [[seismic-wave]] activity and [[foreshock]]s — a lesson in the importance of volcanic earthquake monitoring.
Martinique's geology records approximately 25 million years of arc volcanic activity. The southern part of the island consists of older volcanic rocks eroded to form the distinctive highland massifs and the Sainte-Anne peninsula. The northern region is dominated by Mount Pelée and the products of its Quaternary eruptive history — pyroclastic flow deposits, lava domes, and thick ash layers. The 1902 eruption deposited a nuée ardente (pyroclastic density current) that incinerated Saint-Pierre in minutes, leaving only two survivors from a population of 28,000. The OVSM-IPGP (Volcanological Observatory of Martinique) operates a dense monitoring network with [[seismograph]]s, GPS receivers, and gas sensors to track both tectonic seismicity and volcanic unrest. [[tsunami]] exposure from Caribbean subduction and volcanic flank collapse events is a recognised hazard for Martinique's coastal communities.
