Tinjauan Seismik
Mongolia experiences significant intraplate seismicity associated with the Altai and Hangai mountain systems in the west and central parts of the country. Despite being far from any active plate boundary, Mongolia sits within the broad zone of deformation created by the India-Asia collision, which transmits compressional stress northward into the Asian continent for thousands of kilometres. The Mongolian Altai range in the west contains several major active thrust and strike-slip [[fault]] systems, including the Bolnai Fault — site of one of the largest intraplate earthquakes ever recorded. The Hangai Dome in central Mongolia shows evidence of recent uplift and extension, with normal faults surrounding the dome periphery. Eastern Mongolia becomes progressively more stable, approaching the stable Siberian craton.
Mongolia has produced some of the largest intraplate earthquakes in recorded history. The 1905 Bolnai earthquake (magnitude 8.4) is the largest intraplate earthquake known from Central Asia, involving 400 kilometres of surface rupture on the Bolnai Fault. The same seismic sequence also produced the Tsetserleg earthquake (magnitude 8.0) a few hours before the Bolnai mainshock. Ground deformation was visible for hundreds of kilometres. Earlier, in 1761, an earthquake of estimated magnitude 7.7 struck western Mongolia. The [[aftershock]] sequences of the great 1905 events persisted for years. The relatively sparse population of Mongolia means that casualties from historical earthquakes have been low despite the large magnitudes, but the capital Ulaanbaatar sits in a seismically active zone and has been shaken by moderate events.
The tectonic context of Mongolian seismicity involves the transmission of compressional stress from the Tibet-Pamir collision zone northward through the Asian continent, creating a broad zone of deformation that includes the Altai, Tien Shan, and Baikal rift systems. In Mongolia, this stress is expressed as a mix of thrust and left-lateral strike-slip faulting in the Altai and as extension in the Hangai region — a seemingly paradoxical combination explained by the three-dimensional stress transmission through the heterogeneous Asian lithosphere. The Baikal Rift to the north represents a major extensional system that influences eastern Mongolia. GPS measurements show several millimetres per year of convergence across the Mongolian Altai, confirming ongoing tectonic activity. [[seismic-wave]] energy from major Mongolian earthquakes travels efficiently across the rigid cratonic basement beneath most of the country.

Earthquakes Near Major Cities in Mongolia
Pertanyaan yang Sering Diajukan
Mongolia has a moderate level of seismic activity. Significant earthquakes occur periodically. A total of 2 earthquakes have been recorded in Mongolia's seismic history.
The largest recorded earthquake in Mongolia had a magnitude of 4.5. Earthquakes of this size can cause significant damage depending on depth, location, and local building standards.
Mongolia has had 2 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.
Mongolia is classified in the "Moderate" seismic zone, located in Asia. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
