Tinjauan Seismik
The Netherlands experiences two distinct categories of seismicity: natural tectonic earthquakes from the Roer Valley Graben system, and human-induced earthquakes from gas extraction in the Groningen field. Natural seismicity arises from the Roer Graben — a NW-trending Cenozoic rift system extending from Belgium and the Netherlands into western Germany — whose normal [[fault]] systems have generated the largest natural Dutch earthquakes, including the 1992 Roermond earthquake (ML 5.8), which caused minor damage and was felt across a large area of northwestern Europe, and the 1756 Düren event felt strongly in the Dutch southeast.
The Groningen gas field in the northeastern Netherlands became a globally important case study in induced seismicity. Large-scale extraction of natural gas from the Rotliegend reservoir (at ~3 km depth) caused reservoir compaction and reactivation of ancient [[fault]] systems beneath the field, generating a rapidly escalating earthquake series from the 1990s onward. The strongest event, the 2012 Huizinge earthquake (ML 3.6), prompted a major governmental response: independent research confirmed that extraction was causing the seismicity, and gas production was progressively reduced from 2014 and ultimately terminated in 2023. Peak production periods coincided with dozens of [[magnitude]] 3+ events annually, causing structural damage to thousands of homes and generating significant insurance claims and social disruption. The Groningen case has become a benchmark for induced [[seismic-wave|seismic]] hazard assessment and regulatory practice worldwide.
From a pure tectonic standpoint, the Netherlands lies well inboard of the African–Eurasian plate boundary and would have very low natural seismicity without the Roer Graben. The Graben is a segment of the European Cenozoic Rift System, driven by far-field Alpine stresses and lithospheric processes, with ongoing extension at low rates (0.3–0.5 mm/year). Post-Groningen, Dutch seismic monitoring has been significantly upgraded, and the Netherlands Seismological Service (KNMI) operates an exceptionally dense network in the northeastern provinces to track residual induced seismicity following the end of gas extraction.

Earthquakes Near Major Cities in Netherlands
Pertanyaan yang Sering Diajukan
Netherlands has a moderate level of seismic activity. Significant earthquakes occur periodically. A total of 0 earthquakes have been recorded in Netherlands's seismic history.
Netherlands has had 0 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.
Netherlands is classified in the "Moderate" seismic zone, located in Europe. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
