The 1952 Kamchatka earthquake (Mw 9.0) was the third largest earthquake of the 20th century, generating a major trans-Pacific [[tsunami]] that killed hundreds in Hawaii. The 1994 Kuril Islands earthquake (Mw 8.3) and the 2006 and 2007 Kuril earthquakes (both Mw ~8.3) generated [[tsunami|tsunamis]] that affected Japan and were detected globally. Kamchatka's subduction zone is capable of generating Mw 9+ megathrust events, and paleoseismic evidence confirms such events have occurred repeatedly over geological time.
Sakhalin Island, positioned above the subducting Pacific plate, has produced catastrophic shallow crustal earthquakes. The 1995 Neftegorsk earthquake (Mw 7.1) struck at night on May 28, destroying 80% of the town of Neftegorsk and killing 2,040 people — nearly two-thirds of the town's population. It remains one of the deadliest Russian earthquakes in the modern era and exposed the extreme vulnerability of Soviet-era prefabricated concrete construction (Khrushchev-era panel buildings) to strong ground shaking.
The Lake Baikal region in Siberia is the site of the Baikal Rift System — one of the world's active continental rifts — where the Amur plate is separating from Eurasia, creating the deepest lake on Earth in an extensional basin.
