The geology of Saint Barthélemy consists of Eocene to Oligocene andesitic and dacitic volcanic rocks and related intrusions, representing an older phase of arc volcanism, overlain on the coastal margins by Quaternary coral limestone and beach sand deposits. The island lacks an active volcanic centre and the seismic energy it receives is primarily transmitted from distant sources. The steep rocky terrain limits landslide risk to specific slopes but the low-lying coastal areas and the lagoon at Gustavia face [[tsunami]] exposure. Earthquake and volcanic monitoring for the northern French Lesser Antilles is coordinated by the IPGP (Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris) through its observatory network, with data shared with French civil protection authorities. The territory's small size — approximately 25 square kilometres — limits the number of monitoring stations that can be deployed locally.
