Switzerland occupies the axial zone of the European Alps, making it subject to moderate seismic hazard from Alpine fault systems on all sides. The tectonic framework involves the indentation of the Adriatic–Apulian microplate into the Alps, driving ongoing compression that is transmitted northward into the Alpine foreland and westward into the Jura fold-and-thrust belt. The Rhine Graben, cutting northward from Basel, represents the response of the northern Alpine foreland to this collision — an extensional zone that relieves compressional stresses by pulling the crust apart. Switzerland has developed one of Europe's most sophisticated national seismic hazard models (SED — Swiss Seismological Service), which forms the basis for Swiss building code seismic provisions. The SED operates an exceptionally dense seismic monitoring network and contributes cutting-edge research on seismic hazard, induced seismicity, and earthquake early warning.
