Turkmenistan's seismicity is dominated by the Kopet Dag fold-and-thrust belt, a mountain range that forms the country's southern border with Iran. The Kopet Dag represents the northernmost expression of the Arabia-Eurasia collision zone and is an active compressional orogen where thrust and reverse [[fault]] systems produce frequent moderate-to-large earthquakes. The Kopet Dag Fault, the dominant structure, runs along the base of the range for over 1,000 kilometres and has been the source of catastrophic historical earthquakes. The convergence rate across the Kopet Dag is approximately 8–10 millimetres per year. The capital Ashgabat sits directly at the foot of the Kopet Dag range, on alluvial fans built by rivers descending from the mountains, in an extremely high seismic hazard zone.
The most catastrophic earthquake in Turkmenistan's history was the 1948 Ashgabat earthquake (magnitude 7.3), which struck at 01:12 local time while the population slept. Estimated death tolls range from 110,000 to 176,000 — representing the near-total destruction of a city then home to approximately 200,000 people. The disaster was suppressed from public knowledge during the Soviet era, and accurate casualty figures were not published until the 1990s. The earthquake caused complete collapse of predominantly single-story clay brick construction throughout the city. The [[aftershock]] sequence persisted for months. Earlier, the 1929 Kopet Dag earthquake (magnitude 7.2) killed approximately 3,800 people. The 1895 earthquake near Krasnovodsk (now Turkmenbashi) on the Caspian Sea also caused significant damage.
The deeper tectonic framework of the Kopet Dag involves the transmission of Arabia-Eurasia compressional stresses northward through Iran into the frontal ranges of Turkmenistan. The Kopet Dag is bounded to the north by the flat plains of the Karakum Desert — essentially the stable southern margin of the Turan Platform. The fault at the mountain front concentrates slip and builds up elastic strain between major earthquakes, a classic locked fault geometry. GPS measurements confirm ongoing shortening of approximately 8 mm/yr. The thick alluvial sediments of the Ashgabat Plain amplify [[seismic-wave]] energy compared to bedrock sites in the mountains. The [[epicenter]] distribution of Turkmen earthquakes traces the Kopet Dag fault system clearly, with secondary seismicity associated with the Balkhan Range in the west and the Badkhyz Plateau in the south.
