Venezuela sits at the northern edge of South America where the Caribbean Plate moves eastward relative to the South American Plate along a complex transpressional boundary characterised by right-lateral strike-slip faults, thrust faults, and pull-apart basins. The dominant structural feature is the Boconó-El Pilar Fault System — a series of en-echelon right-lateral faults running east-west across northern Venezuela — which is the primary active seismic source for most of the country's populated Caribbean coastal zone and the Andean highlands. The Venezuelan Andes in the west, including the Mérida Andes (an isolated northern extension of the main Andean chain), are crossed by the Boconó Fault, which has produced multiple historical destructive earthquakes in the densely populated mountain valleys. The Caribbean Plate boundary follows Venezuela's northern coast and extends submarine into the eastern Caribbean, where the El Pilar Fault transitions into an offshore transform system. Maracaibo Basin, one of South America's most productive oil provinces, is structurally controlled by faults that have also generated significant historical earthquakes. Caracas, the capital, sits in a graben-like valley adjacent to the Caracas Fault, one of the Boconó-El Pilar system's branches.

Venezuela's earthquake history includes some of the Western Hemisphere's most destructive colonial-era disasters. The 26 March 1812 earthquake (estimated magnitude 7.7) struck near Caracas during Holy Week, killing approximately 20,000 people — nearly a quarter of the city's population — as churches and colonial buildings collapsed on worshippers; the disaster was used by royalist forces as propaganda against the independence movement, with the royalist Archbishop claiming it was divine punishment. The same earthquake also severely damaged Barquisimeto and Mérida. The 29 October 1900 Caracas earthquake (magnitude 7.6) and the 29 July 1967 Caracas earthquake (magnitude 6.5) both caused significant structural damage in the capital. The 1967 event killed 236 people and demonstrated how a moderate earthquake could cause disproportionate damage in a modern city with reinforced concrete mid-rise buildings whose natural frequencies matched the [[seismic-wave]] period. The 9 July 1997 Cariaco earthquake (magnitude 6.8) killed 73 people in the northeastern coastal state of Sucre and destroyed the town of Cariaco. Earlier, the 1894 Táchira earthquake (magnitude 7.4) devastated the western Andes. The Boconó Fault in the Venezuelan Andes has not ruptured in the modern era through its most hazardous segment, raising long-term concerns about accumulated strain.

Venezuela's tectonic setting reflects the ongoing collision and transpressional deformation between the Caribbean and South American plates, which began in the Cretaceous as the Caribbean Plate moved eastward from its initial position. The Venezuelan Andes represent the northernmost expression of the Andean orogen, connected to the main South American Andes through Colombia, and reflect crustal shortening driven by the Caribbean-South American convergence. The coastal ranges of northern Venezuela — the Cordillera de la Costa — are Cretaceous metamorphic rocks deformed by thrust and transpressional tectonics as the Caribbean margin was accreted onto the South American continental edge. The Maracaibo Block, a crustal fragment between the Venezuelan Andes and the Santa Marta massif of Colombia, rotates relative to both surrounding plates, generating strike-slip faulting on its boundaries. [[aftershock]] sequences following Venezuelan earthquakes tend to be moderate in size given the strike-slip dominant mechanism, which generates sparser [[aftershock]] zones than thrust mechanisms of equivalent [[magnitude]]. Venezuela's FUNVISIS (Venezuelan Foundation for Seismological Research) operates the national seismological network and conducts seismic hazard studies, particularly focused on the Caracas urban area and the oil-producing Maracaibo Basin.
