地震概要

Algeria sits at one of the most hazardous seismic frontiers on the African continent. The northern strip of the country — the Tell Atlas belt — represents the compressional zone where the African plate pushes northward into the Eurasian plate at roughly five millimetres per year. This slow but relentless collision has folded and faulted the sedimentary rocks of the Atlas Mountains, creating a dense network of blind thrust [[fault]]s that run roughly east-west along the coast. Because many of these faults do not reach the surface and were not recognised until modern instrumentation, entire cities were built above hidden seismic hazards. The coastal cities of Algiers, Oran, Bejaia, and Annaba all lie within zones of elevated [[intensity]] exposure.

The most active seismic zone is the Mitidja Basin south of Algiers, bounded by the Blida Fault to the south and the Sahel Fault to the north. Further east, the Kabylie region and the Guelma area also experience frequent moderate earthquakes. In the deep south, the Saharan craton is geologically ancient and stable, producing virtually no seismic activity. Algeria's seismic hazard is therefore strongly concentrated in a coastal belt no wider than 200 kilometres, while the vast Saharan interior remains quiet.

The deadliest earthquake in Algeria's recorded history struck on 10 October 1980 near the town of El Asnam (now Chlef), with a [[magnitude]] of 7.1 on the moment-magnitude scale. More than 2,600 people died and roughly 400,000 were left homeless. The earthquake occurred on a blind thrust fault beneath the Chelif Valley and produced spectacular [[liquefaction]] in low-lying agricultural areas along the Chelif River. The town itself, which had already been destroyed by a magnitude 6.7 earthquake in 1954 killing 1,600 people, was again left in ruins — a stark illustration of the persistent hazard on the same fault system.

In 1954, the El Asnam earthquake (then called Orléansville) struck on 9 September with a magnitude of 6.7, killing approximately 1,600 and injuring thousands. The 2003 Boumerdes earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.8 and its [[epicenter]] near Thenia on the coast east of Algiers, killed over 2,200 people and injured more than 11,000. It also generated a small [[tsunami]] that reached the Balearic Islands in Spain. The 2003 event highlighted that submarine faults along the Algerian continental shelf are capable of producing tsunamigenic earthquakes — a hazard that had been underestimated. Historical records also document a destructive earthquake in Algiers in 1716 that levelled the city and killed several thousand residents.

Geologically, Algeria straddles the boundary between two contrasting tectonic domains. The Saharan platform to the south is a thick, cold, and rigid slab of ancient Precambrian basement that has been geologically stable for hundreds of millions of years. The Tell Atlas to the north is geologically young — largely Mesozoic and Cenozoic sedimentary rocks folded and thrusted during the Neogene Africa-Eurasia collision. The boundary between these two domains — the Atlas fold-and-thrust belt — is where most of Algeria's seismicity is concentrated. Geophysical surveys conducted after the 2003 Boumerdes earthquake identified a previously unknown offshore thrust fault as the causative structure, underscoring the importance of submarine fault mapping in the western Mediterranean. The [[seismic-wave]] patterns recorded at regional networks suggest that rupture propagation in Algerian thrust events tends to be unilateral toward the east or west, reflecting the east-west orientation of the major fault structures.
