French Guiana occupies the northeastern shoulder of South America, sitting on the ancient Guiana Shield — one of the world's most tectonically stable geological formations, composed of Archaean and Proterozoic rocks between 1.7 and 3.5 billion years old. The country has essentially no indigenous seismicity from local fault activity. The Guiana Shield has been geologically inert since the Proterozoic assembly of the South American continent and shows no evidence of active neotectonic faulting in its basement rocks. The coastal sedimentary plain — a belt of young mangrove-covered Holocene and Pleistocene alluvial and marine deposits — is the only geological unit with any potential for seismically triggered effects, but the virtual absence of earthquake ground shaking from local sources means this is largely academic. The distant seismic influences affecting French Guiana are the Caribbean Plate boundary approximately 800 kilometres to the north, the South American [[subduction]] system along the Peru-Ecuador coast, and occasional deep Brazilian intraplate events.

The earthquake history specific to French Guiana records essentially no locally generated seismic events of consequence. The most significant regional event to affect the territory was the November 1755 Lisbon earthquake and associated Atlantic [[tsunami]], which struck the northeastern coast of South America including what is now French Guiana with wave heights of 1 to 2 metres — one of the few historical examples of a trans-Atlantic [[tsunami]] reaching South America. In the instrumental era, large Andean subduction events — such as the 1960 Chilean earthquake ([[moment-magnitude]] 9.5) and the 1906 Ecuador-Colombia earthquake ([[moment-magnitude]] 8.8) — transmitted [[seismic-wave]]s across the stable South American craton and have produced the clearest seismographic signals recorded in the territory. Events from the Lesser Antilles subduction zone to the north (notably the 2004 Les Saintes Guadeloupe earthquake, [[moment-magnitude]] 6.3) have occasionally been felt in northern French Guiana. No destructive earthquake damage has been documented in French Guiana in its colonial or modern history.

The tectonic framework of French Guiana is defined by the geological structure of the Guiana Shield — the exposed northern flank of the Amazonian Craton. The metamorphic and igneous basement includes Archaean granite-greenstone terranes up to 3.5 billion years old, Transamazonian orogen granites and gneisses formed approximately 2.1 billion years ago during one of the world's major Proterozoic crustal growth events, and younger Proterozoic intrusive rocks. These rocks are among the oldest and most internally rigid continental materials on Earth, transmitting [[seismic-wave]]s at very high velocities and with minimal attenuation, but generating virtually no earthquakes from their own fault systems under the current regional stress field. The passive Atlantic margin to the north and east, opened when South America separated from Africa during the Mesozoic, adds a submarine rifted margin context but no active seismicity. The Kourou Space Centre — one of the world's major launch facilities — sits on the coastal plain of French Guiana; its construction included detailed geotechnical assessment confirming the extremely low local seismic hazard that makes the site attractive for precision launch operations.

French Guiana has a low level of seismic activity. Large earthquakes are infrequent but not impossible. A total of 0 earthquakes have been recorded in French Guiana's seismic history.

French Guiana has had 0 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.

French Guiana is classified in the "Low" seismic zone, located in South America. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
