Jamaica sits within the left-lateral transpressional zone of the Caribbean-North American plate boundary, with significant seismic hazard from strike-slip faults both on and around the island. The Enriquillo-Plantain Garden Fault Zone — the same structure that caused the 2010 Haiti earthquake — passes through or near Jamaica, along with the Walton Fault to the north and several offshore transform segments. The Blue Mountains in the east, rising to nearly 2,300 metres, represent an uplifted fault block reflecting compressional stresses within the transpressional system. Kingston, the capital and main port city, sits in a coastal depression underlain by thick alluvial and marine sediments capable of significant [[seismic-wave]] amplification. The 1907 Kingston earthquake — one of the Caribbean's most destructive events — provides a benchmark for what a closely located [[fault]] earthquake can do to a city of vulnerable construction.
The 14 January 1907 Kingston earthquake (magnitude 6.5) struck with the [[epicenter]] just offshore southwest of the city. The combination of shallow source, soft coastal sediments, and unreinforced masonry construction killed approximately 800–1,000 people and destroyed most of the city centre; fire following the earthquake added to the destruction, a pattern reminiscent of the 1906 San Francisco disaster. Port Royal — the former pirate haven — had already been partially destroyed and sunk by an earlier earthquake and [[tsunami]] on 7 June 1692, which killed approximately 2,000 people and destroyed much of the seventeenth-century city in minutes as the waterfront liquefied and slid into the harbour. This 1692 event is one of the most dramatic [[liquefaction]] disasters in Caribbean history. Jamaica has experienced several M5–6 events in subsequent decades, including events in 1957, 1993, and 2012 near the Kingston metropolitan area and along the Plantain Garden fault on the eastern tip.
Jamaica's tectonic setting reflects its position as a microplate-like fragment within the complex Caribbean-North American boundary zone. The island's geology is diverse, encompassing Cretaceous volcanic and intrusive rocks in the Blue Mountains, Eocene limestone in the interior, and Quaternary alluvial deposits in the coastal plains and enclosed basins like the Liguanea Plain on which Kingston is built. The Blue Mountains expose the island's basement — an accreted oceanic and island-arc sequence deformed during Caribbean Plate assembly — while the limestone karst landscape of the interior reflects subsequent marine submergence and carbonate deposition during Tertiary sea-level highstands. The [[fault]] systems crossing Jamaica are part of the diffuse Caribbean-North American boundary, where the principal transform motion is distributed across several en-echelon fault strands rather than a single throughgoing structure. This distribution means that [[aftershock]] sequences can be geographically widespread. The Jamaica Earthquake Unit monitors local seismicity.
