Kenya occupies a central position along the eastern branch of the East African Rift System, one of the most geologically active continental rift zones on Earth. The Kenya Rift — also called the Gregory Rift — runs north-south through the centre of the country, expressed at the surface by a chain of lakes (Turkana, Baringo, Bogoria, Nakuru, Elementaita, Naivasha, Magadi), active volcanoes (Longonot, Suswa, Menengai, Korosi), and steep escarpments bounded by major normal [[fault]]s. This rift has been extending since approximately 20 to 25 million years ago and currently accommodates extension at 2 to 3 millimetres per year.
The primary seismogenic structures in Kenya are the rift border faults — large, steeply dipping normal faults that form the escarpments of the Rift Valley — and the intra-rift faults within the valley floor. The Elgeyo Fault on the western escarpment and the Nguruman Fault on the eastern escarpment are among the longest and most seismically capable structures. However, modern microseismicity patterns suggest that the active slip is distributed among many smaller faults within the rift axis, associated with magmatic plumbing beneath the volcanic centres. The area around Baringo, Bogoria, and the northern Rift Valley has historically been the most seismically active in Kenya.
In January 2007, a significant earthquake sequence struck the Baringo area with a main shock of [[magnitude]] 5.0 followed by numerous [[aftershock]]s. Earlier, in December 2006, a moderate earthquake caused minor damage near Lake Baringo. In November 2024, a magnitude 4.6 earthquake was felt widely in Nairobi and central Kenya, highlighting that the rift seismicity can affect major population centres. The town of Naivasha, in the southern rift near the Longonot and Suswa volcanoes, has experienced numerous low-to-moderate events over the decades.
Northern Kenya, including the Turkana Depression and the Ethiopian border region, is seismically active because the Turkana Rift represents a complex accommodation zone between the Main Ethiopian Rift and the Kenya Rift. The Turkana Depression is unusually wide and structurally complex, and several moderate earthquakes have been recorded in this area. A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck near Lake Turkana in 1959 and was widely felt across northern Kenya and southern Ethiopia.
The [[epicenter]] distribution of Kenyan earthquakes broadly follows the rift axis but shows clustering near volcanic centres, reflecting the interaction between seismogenic faulting and magmatic processes. Periods of volcanic unrest at Longonot or Menengai caldera are typically accompanied by swarms of small-to-moderate earthquakes. The [[seismic-wave]] characteristics of Kenyan rift earthquakes predominantly show normal-faulting focal mechanisms, consistent with the extensional regime, though strike-slip mechanisms are also observed in the Turkana region where east-west transfer faults accommodate differential extension between rift segments.
Beyond the rift, coastal Kenya along the Indian Ocean margin experiences occasional seismicity from offshore structures. The sub-aqueous East African continental slope and the diffuse deformation of the Somalian plate margin contribute low-level seismicity east of the rift. In 2017, a sequence of earthquakes along the Kenya-Tanzania border included events up to magnitude 4.8 that were felt across the Kilimanjaro region.
The geological framework of Kenya includes the ancient Archean and Proterozoic basement of the East African Craton flanking the rift on both sides, overlain by Cenozoic rift sediments and volcanic products within the valley. The thick cratonic lithosphere on either side of the rift acts as a rigid boundary that confines deformation to the rift zone. The Nairobi metropolitan area, now exceeding five million people, lies within the rift system on the Athi Plains — a volcanic plateau of Pleistocene age. While Nairobi itself sits in a relatively stable part of the plateau, the proximity of the active rift faults means that moderate-to-large events could generate damaging shaking in the capital. Seismic hazard assessment for Nairobi is an active area of research given the city's rapid growth and largely unregulated construction.
