Djibouti sits at one of the most extraordinary tectonic crossroads on Earth — the Afar Triple Junction, where three tectonic rifts converge: the East African Rift extending southward, the Red Sea spreading centre extending northwestward, and the Gulf of Aden spreading centre extending eastward. This triple junction geometry means that Djibouti is simultaneously being stretched in multiple directions as the African (Nubian) plate, the Somalian plate, and the Arabian plate each diverge from the common meeting point. Within hours, ground fissures had opened across the rift valley floor and a basaltic fissure eruption commenced at Ardoukoba, producing lava fountains and flows.
