Eritrea lies along one of Africa's most tectonically significant margins — the western shore of the Red Sea, which is an active spreading centre where the African (Nubian) plate separates from the Arabian plate at roughly 1.5 to 2 centimetres per year. The northern Red Sea spreading axis runs offshore but its boundary [[fault]]s intersect the Eritrean coastline, particularly along the Danakil Depression which extends from Ethiopia across the southern Eritrean lowlands. The Eritrean coastal zone therefore experiences moderate seismicity from both the Red Sea spreading system and from the northern extension of the East African Rift through the Afar Triangle.
The Dahlak Archipelago, a group of coral and volcanic islands in the southern Red Sea off the Eritrean coast, sits above the transition between thinned continental crust and oceanic crust. Occasional low-to-moderate [[seismic-wave]] events are detected in this area associated with the offshore spreading segments and transform faults that offset them. The town of Massawa on the coast lies in a zone of elevated seismic hazard compared to the Eritrean interior.
Historical seismic records for Eritrea are limited because the country spent much of the 20th century under Italian colonial rule, then under Ethiopian administration, and subsequently through a prolonged independence struggle. Instrumental records from before 1991 are incomplete. A damaging earthquake sequence near Massawa in 1921 caused building damage in the coastal town. Occasional events of [[magnitude]] 5.0 to 5.5 have been detected along the Red Sea rift margin in the modern era.
The Eritrean interior — particularly the highland plateau — sits on ancient Precambrian basement of the Nubian Shield. These rocks are geologically stable and experience very little seismicity. The strong contrast between the seismically active coastal zone and the quiet interior plateau reflects the fundamental tectonic boundary between the active Red Sea rift and the stable African craton.

Earthquakes Near Major Cities in Eritrea
Sıkça Sorulan Sorular
Eritrea has a low level of seismic activity. Large earthquakes are infrequent but not impossible. A total of 0 earthquakes have been recorded in Eritrea's seismic history.
Eritrea has had 0 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.
Eritrea is classified in the "Low" seismic zone, located in Africa. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
