Peru faces some of the Western Hemisphere's greatest seismic hazard from the [[subduction-zone]] of the Nazca Plate beneath the South American Plate along the Peru-Chile Trench, which lies 100 to 150 kilometres off the Pacific coast. Convergence rates of approximately 6 to 7 centimetres per year have accumulated elastic strain along the Peruvian [[subduction-zone]] for centuries, producing periodic great earthquakes with associated [[tsunami]]s that have shaped the country's coastal geography and history. Peru's seismic complexity is increased by the variation in subduction geometry: beneath central Peru, the Nazca Plate flattens into near-horizontal geometry (flat-slab subduction) as it underthrusts the South American Plate at shallow angles, carrying seismicity and deformation far into the Andean Cordillera and reducing surface volcanism over that stretch. Beneath southern Peru and northern Chile, subduction returns to steeper angles, supporting the active volcanic arc of the southern Andes. The subduction interface is variably locked along its length: some segments last ruptured centuries ago and are considered mature seismic gaps with high hazard. Inland, the Andes host thrust faults, reverse faults, and strike-slip faults that generate crustal earthquakes independent of the megathrust system, and the Lima metropolitan area — home to over 10 million people — is situated between the locked [[subduction-zone]] interface offshore and active crustal faults onshore.
Peru's earthquake history is among the most destructive in South America. The 13 August 1868 southern Peru earthquake (magnitude 8.5–9.0) generated a [[tsunami]] that devastated Arica and was felt along the entire Pacific coast of South America; estimates of deaths range into the tens of thousands. The 31 May 1970 Ancash earthquake (magnitude 7.9) triggered the Huascarán debris avalanche — a mass of ice, rock, and glacial till that descended 3,500 metres in approximately three minutes and buried the cities of Yungay and Ranrahirca, killing approximately 70,000 people — making it one of the deadliest landslide disasters in recorded history. The 1970 earthquake killed a total of 70,000 to 80,000 people, making it the most deadly earthquake in the history of South America and one of the deadliest of the twentieth century worldwide. The 23 June 2001 southern Peru earthquake (magnitude 8.4) generated a [[tsunami]] that reached heights of 4–7 metres in southern Peru and caused damage to coastal communities. The 15 August 2007 Pisco earthquake (magnitude 8.0) killed 519 people, destroyed the colonial town of Pisco, and damaged the historic city of Ica; the [[epicenter]] was offshore and the [[tsunami]] reached nearby coastlines within minutes of the event. The Lima metropolitan area has not experienced a great interface earthquake since at least the early 19th century (the 1746 Lima earthquake, estimated magnitude 8.6, destroyed the city and generated a tsunami) and the accumulated strain on the Lima segment of the [[subduction-zone]] is a subject of intense scientific attention.
The geological architecture of Peru reflects the long-term consequences of Andean subduction and crustal thickening. The Andes form the world's highest tropical mountain range, with multiple summits exceeding 6,000 metres and the Altiplano plateau at an average elevation of 3,800 metres, both products of crustal shortening driven by Nazca subduction. The coastal desert — one of the driest on Earth — forms in the rain shadow of the Andes created by the same orographic processes. The subducted Nazca Plate carries seamount chains and the Nazca Ridge, whose collision with the [[subduction-zone]] perturbs seismic coupling locally. [[aftershock]] sequences following major Peruvian earthquakes can be extensive: the 2007 Pisco sequence continued for months, including an M6.0 event several weeks after the mainshock that caused additional building collapses. Lima's geology presents particular urban hazard concerns: the city is built on Quaternary river gravels and coastal sand deposits overlying much older basement, and the contrast in [[seismic-wave]] velocity between these units is expected to produce strong amplification during a future great earthquake. [[liquefaction]] of saturated coastal soils near Callao and Lima's port district is an additional concern documented in geotechnical studies. Peru's Geophysical Institute (IGP) operates the national seismological monitoring network.
