Bermuda is a British Overseas Territory located in the western North Atlantic Ocean, roughly 1,070 kilometres east of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. The territory sits on a submerged volcanic seamount — the Bermuda Pedestal — rising from the deep oceanic crust of the western Atlantic basin, far from any active plate boundary. The seamount formed approximately 30 to 110 million years ago as the North American Plate drifted westward over a hotspot or thermal anomaly in the mantle; volcanic activity long since ceased, and the modern islands are a cap of coral limestone draped over the eroded volcanic pinnacle. There are no active [[fault]] systems on or near Bermuda, and the island generates essentially no indigenous seismicity. The North American Plate on which Bermuda rides is one of the most seismically stable plates on Earth in this region. The primary seismic hazard — minimal by any standard — derives from the remote transmission of [[seismic-wave]]s from distant earthquakes along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge to the east and from the active Caribbean and North American plate boundaries to the southwest.
Bermuda's earthquake history is essentially a record of felt events from distant sources. The most notable seismic event associated with Bermuda was not an earthquake but the 1929 Grand Banks submarine landslide, which generated a [[tsunami]] and snapped transatlantic telegraph cables; the event was felt in Bermuda as both weak shaking and an anomalous ocean wave. A small number of instrumentally recorded earthquakes have occurred near the Bermuda Rise in the deep ocean — low-magnitude events associated with minor flexural or intraplate stress adjustments within the old oceanic lithosphere — but none have been damaging. Historic records from the colonial era do not describe destructive local earthquake events. The island has been shaken by teleseismic waves from major Caribbean events, including the 2010 Haiti earthquake (magnitude 7.0), but at intensities too low to cause damage or alarm.
The geological setting of Bermuda underscores how tectonic quiescence characterises old oceanic intraplate environments. The volcanic pedestal beneath Bermuda is composed of Cretaceous alkalic basalts; overlying it are thick Pleistocene and Holocene eolianite and coral limestone deposits that record successive sea-level fluctuations during glacial cycles. Post-glacial isostatic rebound — the gradual rise of the lithosphere following deglaciation — is minimal here compared to higher-latitude North American sites. The territory's seismic risk is rated minimal, and engineering standards for earthquake resistance are largely irrelevant to local construction practice.
