The Dominican Republic shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti and faces a similar but geographically distributed seismic hazard arising from the complex transpressional boundary between the North American and Caribbean plates. Two major left-lateral strike-slip fault zones dominate the seismic landscape: the Septentrional Fault, running east-west along the northern coastal plain through the Cibao Valley, and the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden Fault Zone (EPGFZ), which traverses the southern peninsula. Both faults are capable of hosting major earthquakes; the Septentrional in particular passes through the heavily populated Cibao Valley and the city of Santiago de los Caballeros. Offshore, thrust faulting along the northern Caribbean plate boundary adds an additional source of [[magnitude]] 7+ earthquake risk. The country also lies within range of [[tsunami]] generated by offshore events along the Puerto Rico Trench to the north and the Caribbean subduction system to the east. Local geology, including thick alluvial deposits in the Cibao and Azua valleys, creates amplification conditions that can worsen shaking severity.

The 2010 Haiti earthquake (magnitude 7.0) caused severe damage in the Dominican Republic's southwestern border region and was felt throughout the country, though damage on the Dominican side was far less severe than in Haiti owing to different construction standards and building stock. The 4 August 1946 Dominican Republic earthquake (magnitude 8.1) struck offshore in the Mona Passage between Hispaniola and Puerto Rico and generated a locally destructive [[tsunami]] that killed approximately 1,800 people in the Nagua and Samaná Bay coastal areas — the most deadly tsunamic disaster in Caribbean history. The 1953 earthquake near San Juan de la Maguana (magnitude 6.3) killed dozens and destroyed hundreds of adobe structures. Historical accounts record a major 1751 earthquake near Santo Domingo that destroyed much of the colonial city, and a 1770 earthquake that caused severe damage in the south. The Septentrional Fault in the Cibao Valley has not produced a great earthquake in the modern instrumented era, raising concerns that strain has been accumulating for many decades.

The island of Hispaniola reflects the same tectonic origins as Cuba — accreted terranes assembled along the northern Caribbean margin during the Cretaceous and Paleogene — subsequently overprinted by the active transpressional boundary between the North American and Caribbean plates. The Dominican Republic's topography is more varied than Haiti's, with several mountain ranges including the Cordillera Central reaching nearly 3,100 metres, and broad fertile valleys that serve as the country's agricultural heartland. The Enriquillo Rift Valley — actually a pull-apart basin formed within the left-lateral fault system — runs west into Haiti and continues as a structural depression hosting several lakes including Lago Enriquillo. This valley marks the surface expression of the EPGFZ. [[seismic-wave]] amplification in the alluvial soils of the Cibao Valley has been documented scientifically and represents a priority concern for urban seismic hazard assessment in Santiago, the country's second-largest city.
