El Salvador is one of the smallest and most densely populated countries in the Americas, and it confronts extreme seismic and volcanic hazard from its position directly above the Middle America [[subduction-zone]]. The Cocos Plate dives beneath the Caribbean Plate along the Middle America Trench, which lies approximately 100 kilometres off the Pacific coast, generating both interplate megathrust earthquakes from the shallow locked zone and deep intraslab earthquakes from within the descending slab itself. The Central America volcanic front bisects the country, and active volcanoes including Santa Ana (Ilamatepec), San Miguel, and Izalco sit atop the same magma system fed by slab-derived fluids. Crustal faults running roughly east-west through the Salvadoran interior accommodating back-arc extension add a third source of seismicity. The combination of offshore megathrust events, deep intraslab events, and shallow crustal fault ruptures means that El Salvador faces a diverse portfolio of earthquake types at virtually all depths.
Two devastating earthquakes struck El Salvador in early 2001, separated by less than five weeks, highlighting both the offshore and onshore sources of seismic hazard. On 13 January 2001, a magnitude 7.7 intraslab earthquake struck 100 kilometres offshore, killing 852 people; the [[epicenter]] was within the descending Cocos slab at a depth of approximately 60 kilometres, and the resulting [[seismic-wave]]s triggered catastrophic landslides throughout the country, most notably the Las Colinas slide in Santa Tecla that buried a residential neighbourhood and killed approximately 500 people in minutes. On 13 February 2001, a magnitude 6.6 shallow crustal earthquake struck the San Vicente and Cuscatlán departments, killing 315 people and destroying thousands of adobe houses. The compound disaster killed over 1,200 people in total. Earlier, the 1986 San Salvador earthquake (magnitude 5.7) killed approximately 1,500 people in the capital, demonstrating how even relatively moderate shallow events cause catastrophic losses in areas of weak construction. The town of San Salvador has been repeatedly destroyed by earthquakes throughout colonial history, including major events in 1576, 1659, 1798, 1854, and 1873.
El Salvador's tectonic setting is a textbook example of an [[subduction-zone]] volcanic arc system. The oceanic Cocos Plate, formed at the East Pacific Rise, travels northeast and dives beneath the Caribbean Plate at a rate of approximately 7 centimetres per year. As the plate descends, it carries oceanic sediments and water-saturated basalt; at depths of 80 to 150 kilometres, the elevated pressure and temperature drive water from the slab minerals into the overlying mantle wedge, lowering the melting point and generating magma. This magma rises through the crust to feed the volcanic arc. The seismic coupling at the interface — measuring how locked the plates are — varies along strike, with some segments storing more elastic strain than others. [[aftershock]] sequences following large Salvadoran earthquakes can be prolonged and generate secondary [[liquefaction]] in water-saturated coastal soils. The government seismic monitoring agency (SNET) maintains a national network and participates in regional early warning research.
