Montserrat is a British Overseas Territory in the Lesser Antilles whose identity has been fundamentally transformed by the ongoing eruption of the Soufrière Hills volcano, which has been erupting continuously since 18 July 1995 — one of the longest sustained volcanic eruptions of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The island sits within the active volcanic arc of the Lesser Antilles, where the North American Plate subducts beneath the Caribbean Plate. Soufrière Hills is a complex andesitic stratovolcano whose eruption has produced repeated dome-building episodes, pyroclastic flows, surges, lahars, and major explosive events. The volcanic system generates intense seismicity, including hybrid earthquakes produced by magma movement, long-period volcanic [[seismic-wave]]s from hydrothermal fluid resonance, rockfall events recorded by broadband instruments, and tectonic earthquakes from the [[subduction-zone]] system. For practical purposes, Montserrat's seismicity since 1995 has been dominated by the volcanic cycle rather than purely tectonic sources.
The pre-eruptive earthquake history of Montserrat included modest regional events. In 1897, a significant earthquake (estimated M5–6) caused structural damage on the island. The great 1843 Guadeloupe earthquake (estimated M8.0) and the 1897 event were historically the most significant tectonic earthquakes affecting Montserrat before the volcanic eruption era. The onset of volcanic activity in 1995 was itself heralded by weeks of [[foreshock]]-like seismic swarms that alerted volcanologists to the impending eruption. The 25 June 1997 dome collapse produced the deadliest pyroclastic flows of the eruption, killing 19 people in the previously evacuated exclusion zone. By 1997, the capital Plymouth and the entire southern two-thirds of the island had been buried under pyroclastic deposits and rendered uninhabitable, displacing approximately two-thirds of the population. Major explosive events in 1997, 2003, and 2006 generated volcanic [[seismic-wave]] signatures detected globally.
The Soufrière Hills eruption has provided volcanologists with an unprecedented, continuously monitored case study of andesitic dome-building volcanism. The Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO), established at the eruption's onset, operates one of the densest volcanic seismic networks in the world relative to island size, with [[seismograph]] stations distributed across the accessible northern half of the island and on offshore buoys. The relationship between [[seismic-wave]] patterns — particularly the frequency, depth, and waveform character of volcanic earthquakes — and eruptive behaviour is continuously analysed to provide civil protection authorities with real-time hazard assessments. The eruption has filled Plymouth harbour, extended the island's coastline southward through lava delta formation, and fundamentally altered the island's topography. The volcano remains active at the time of writing, and the southern exclusion zone remains in place.

Montserrat has a low level of seismic activity. Large earthquakes are infrequent but not impossible. A total of 0 earthquakes have been recorded in Montserrat's seismic history.
Montserrat has had 0 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.
Montserrat is classified in the "Low" seismic zone, located in North America. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
