Panama occupies a geological crossroads where the Central American volcanic arc transitions into the compressional zone of northwestern South America, creating a diverse seismic hazard from multiple tectonic sources. The North Panama Deformed Belt (NPDB) — a zone of offshore fold-and-thrust structures along the Caribbean coast — represents the collision zone between the southern end of the North American Plate and the Cocos and Nazca plates. This belt is capable of hosting large thrust earthquakes and associated [[tsunami]]s on the Caribbean coast. On the Pacific side, the Panama Fracture Zone marks the edge of the Cocos Plate to the east and the Nazca Plate's northern boundary, with strike-slip and transform motion contributing to seismicity. The Chiriquí region in western Panama near the Costa Rica border represents the most seismically active zone onshore, where the Central America arc system enters Panama and multiple fault systems intersect. The Panama Canal Zone, while not in the most active seismic region, sits on alluvial lake sediments and would be vulnerable to infrastructure damage from a moderate nearby earthquake.
The 7 April 1991 Bocas del Toro earthquake (magnitude 7.4) struck the Caribbean coastal province, killing 23 people, injuring hundreds, and causing major structural damage in Bocas del Toro town and surrounding communities. A small [[tsunami]] was generated but caused limited coastal damage. The 22 July 2010 Panama-Costa Rica border earthquake (magnitude 6.2) killed at least four people and damaged over 800 structures in the Chiriquí Highlands. The 17 July 1930 earthquake (magnitude 7.1) in the Darién region caused destruction in eastern Panama. Historical accounts document seismic damage to the colonial city of Panama City in 1621 and subsequent episodes, though the documented Caribbean flank events are more numerous. Panama has experienced regular M5–6 events along the NPDB and Chiriquí fault systems throughout the modern monitoring era.
Panama's unique geological role as the isthmus that closed the Central American seaway approximately 3 million years ago is reflected in its tectonic structure. The country represents the narrow land connection between North and South America, and its rocks record the accretion of oceanic arcs and plateaus that ultimately built the isthmus. The Azuero Peninsula in central Panama exposes some of the oldest rocks in the country — Cretaceous oceanic plateau basalts related to the Caribbean Large Igneous Province. Eastern Panama's Darién region transitions geologically and tectonically into Colombia, where the Nazca-Caribbean-South American triple junction creates further complexity. The relatively young age of Panama's tectonic amalgamation means that many structural boundaries are still seismically active rather than fully welded. [[seismic-wave]] monitoring is carried out by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and the Sistema Nacional de Protección Civil (SINAPROC).

Earthquakes Near Major Cities in Panama
Panama has a moderate level of seismic activity. Significant earthquakes occur periodically. A total of 7 earthquakes have been recorded in Panama's seismic history.
The largest recorded earthquake in Panama had a magnitude of 5.4. Earthquakes of this size can cause significant damage depending on depth, location, and local building standards.
Panama has had 7 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.
Panama is classified in the "Moderate" seismic zone, located in North America. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.

Panama
