Saint Barthélemy (Saint-Barth) is a French overseas collectivity in the northern Lesser Antilles, situated on the outer, non-volcanic arc of the island chain, between the geologically similar Saint Martin to the northwest and the active volcanic arc islands to the south. The island is built primarily on older volcanic and intrusive rocks of Eocene to Oligocene age overlain by coral limestone, placing it in a different geological context from the active volcanic arc that includes Montserrat, Guadeloupe, and Martinique. The primary seismic source for Saint Barthélemy is the Lesser Antilles [[subduction-zone]] to the east, where the North American Plate descends beneath the Caribbean Plate at roughly 2 centimetres per year. Secondary sources include the Anegada Passage fault zone to the northwest and the diffuse compressional tectonics of the northern arc platform. Seismic hazard is moderate — elevated compared to tectonically inert regions but lower than the active volcanic arc islands directly to the south.
Saint Barthélemy's earthquake history is shared with the broader northern Lesser Antilles. The 8 February 1843 Guadeloupe earthquake — estimated [[magnitude]] 8.0 — was strongly felt on Saint Barthélemy and caused structural damage to the island's colonial-era stone and masonry buildings. The 1867 Virgin Islands earthquake (magnitude 7.5) and its associated [[tsunami]] affected the northern arc and would have struck the island's exposed eastern and southern coasts with wave energy. In the instrumental era, numerous M4–6 subduction earthquakes from the Lesser Antilles arc have been felt on the island. A magnitude 6.3 earthquake in November 2004 near the Virgin Islands was widely felt across the northern arc including Saint-Barth. The island's small population and generally modern construction stock have prevented casualties from recent felt events.
The geology of Saint Barthélemy consists of Eocene to Oligocene andesitic and dacitic volcanic rocks and related intrusions, representing an older phase of arc volcanism, overlain on the coastal margins by Quaternary coral limestone and beach sand deposits. The island lacks an active volcanic centre and the seismic energy it receives is primarily transmitted from distant sources. The steep rocky terrain limits landslide risk to specific slopes but the low-lying coastal areas and the lagoon at Gustavia face [[tsunami]] exposure. Earthquake and volcanic monitoring for the northern French Lesser Antilles is coordinated by the IPGP (Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris) through its observatory network, with data shared with French civil protection authorities. The territory's small size — approximately 25 square kilometres — limits the number of monitoring stations that can be deployed locally.

Saint Barthélemy has a low level of seismic activity. Large earthquakes are infrequent but not impossible. A total of 40 earthquakes have been recorded in Saint Barthélemy's seismic history.
The largest recorded earthquake in Saint Barthélemy had a magnitude of 5.0. Earthquakes of this size can cause significant damage depending on depth, location, and local building standards.
Saint Barthélemy has had 40 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.
Saint Barthélemy is classified in the "Low" seismic zone, located in North America. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
