Saint Martin is a French overseas collectivity occupying the northern half of an island shared with the Dutch territory of Sint Maarten, located in the northern Lesser Antilles at the boundary between the Greater Antilles platform to the northwest and the volcanic arc of the Lesser Antilles to the south. The island sits on the outer carbonate and volcanic arc of the Lesser Antilles, comparable in geological setting to Anguilla to the north and Saint Barthélemy to the south. The primary seismic source is the Lesser Antilles [[subduction-zone]] to the northeast, where the North American Plate descends beneath the Caribbean Plate at roughly 2 centimetres per year. The Anegada Passage fault zone to the west — a significant transform feature connecting the Puerto Rico Trench system with the Lesser Antilles arc — also contributes to regional seismicity. Seismic hazard is moderate, reflecting the island's position on the outer arc away from the most active volcanic and subduction segments.

Saint Martin's most significant seismic event was the 1843 Guadeloupe earthquake, estimated at [[magnitude]] 8.0, which devastated the northern Lesser Antilles on 8 February 1843. Reports from the Dutch side (then Sint Maarten) documented widespread collapse of masonry buildings, deaths, and serious damage to the colonial towns; the French side (Saint Martin) suffered similarly. This event remains the reference worst-case tectonic earthquake for the island's hazard planning. The 1867 Virgin Islands earthquake and its associated [[tsunami]] also affected the island's coastal communities. In the modern era, numerous M4–6 arc earthquakes and Anegada Passage events have produced felt shaking on the island, including events in 2004 and 2018. Hurricane Irma in 2017, while not seismic, reminded authorities that Saint Martin's low-lying coastal areas and densely built Marigot waterfront are highly vulnerable to combined natural hazards.

Saint Martin's geology consists largely of Eocene volcanic and intrusive basement rocks — andesites, dacites, and granodiorites — overlain by Quaternary coral reef and beach deposits on the flat coastal margins. The island shares its geological basement with Sint Maarten, Anguilla, and Saint Barthélemy, reflecting their common origin as fragments of an older, now largely dormant volcanic arc terrane. The Grand Case and Marigot lowlands, built on alluvial and marine sand and silt, would experience [[seismic-wave]] amplification in a significant nearby earthquake and could be subject to [[liquefaction]] under saturated conditions. [[tsunami]] exposure from both the Anegada Passage fault system and the broader Lesser Antilles subduction zone is a recognised coastal hazard. Monitoring is shared between the French IPGP network and regional Caribbean seismological networks.
