Sint Maarten is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands occupying the southern half of a shared island with the French collectivity of Saint Martin, in the northern Lesser Antilles. Sint Maarten sits at the boundary between the outer arc of the Lesser Antilles and the transition toward the Greater Antilles platform, sharing the seismic setting of Saint Martin entirely. The primary seismic source is the Lesser Antilles [[subduction-zone]] to the east and northeast, where the North American Plate descends beneath the Caribbean Plate at roughly 2 centimetres per year. The Anegada Passage fault zone to the west contributes additional seismicity from the transform boundary connecting the Puerto Rico Trench with the Lesser Antilles arc. The island's position on the outer, non-volcanic arc means it is exposed to regional subduction seismicity and distant fault earthquakes rather than local volcanic seismicity. Seismic hazard is moderate, comparable to Saint Martin and other outer arc territories of the northern Lesser Antilles.

Sint Maarten's earthquake history mirrors that of Saint Martin, as both entities share the same island and identical geological exposure. The 1843 Guadeloupe earthquake (estimated [[magnitude]] 8.0) caused widespread destruction on the Dutch side, collapsing buildings in Philipsburg and damaging infrastructure throughout the lowland coastal zone. Contemporary Dutch colonial records document deaths and significant structural loss. The 1867 Virgin Islands earthquake (magnitude 7.5) generated a [[tsunami]] that struck the island's coastal areas. In the modern era, M4–6 events from the Lesser Antilles arc and the Anegada Passage have caused intermittent alarm and minor damage. Sint Maarten's dense tourist infrastructure — hotels, marinas, and low-lying commercial development around Great Bay — represents significant asset exposure to earthquake shaking and [[tsunami]] inundation. Hurricane Irma (2017) devastated much of the island's infrastructure, highlighting the vulnerability of this built environment to multiple natural hazards.

Sint Maarten's geology is geologically identical to that of Saint Martin: Eocene volcanic and plutonic basement rocks overlain by Quaternary carbonate and beach deposits. The Great Salt Pond in the interior is a coastal lagoon depression of structural origin. The lowland coastal strip around Philipsburg, Simpson Bay, and Maho Bay is built on coral sand and reef rubble, creating conditions for [[seismic-wave]] amplification and [[liquefaction]] in a major nearby earthquake. The territory's small size and high population density — Sint Maarten has among the highest population densities in the Caribbean — concentrate exposure in a geologically vulnerable setting. Seismic monitoring is shared between the KNMI-coordinated Netherlands Antilles network and regional Caribbean instruments. Coordination with Saint Martin civil protection is essential given the joint management of the island's natural hazard response.

Sint Maarten has a low level of seismic activity. Large earthquakes are infrequent but not impossible. A total of 1 earthquakes have been recorded in Sint Maarten's seismic history.

The largest recorded earthquake in Sint Maarten had a magnitude of 4.23. Earthquakes of this size can cause significant damage depending on depth, location, and local building standards.

Sint Maarten has had 1 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.

Sint Maarten is classified in the "Low" seismic zone, located in North America. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
