Suriname, like neighbouring Guyana, sits squarely on the stable Guiana Shield — a fragment of ancient Precambrian continental crust that has been geologically inert since the Proterozoic and generates essentially no indigenous seismicity. The country has virtually no recorded earthquake history from local fault activity. Suriname's geological stability reflects the antiquity and rigidity of the Guiana Shield basement, which shares the same characteristics as the rock units exposed across southern Venezuela, Guyana, French Guiana, and northern Brazil. The primary seismic exposure of Suriname comes from distant sources: moderate events from the Caribbean plate boundary far to the north, large Andean subduction earthquakes to the west, and occasional deep Brazilian intraplate events. These rare distant signals produce at most weak felt motion at the surface. The Atlantic passive margin to the northeast offers no active tectonic structures. Suriname's flat coastal plain, much of which lies at or below sea level and is protected by river dikes and seawalls, has theoretical exposure to a large Atlantic or Caribbean [[tsunami]] but the probability of such an event directly impacting Suriname's coast is very low.

No significant damaging earthquakes have been recorded in Suriname in its documented history. Occasional felt events from distant sources have been reported in Paramaribo. The 2010 Haiti earthquake (magnitude 7.0) and regional Caribbean events have been felt weakly in northern Suriname. Large Chilean subduction events (the 2010 Maule M8.8 and 2011 Tohoku M9.0 analogue) transmitted [[seismic-wave]]s globally, and seismographs in Suriname recorded these events clearly, but no surface shaking was felt. Suriname's national disaster management is focused primarily on flooding rather than seismic events, reflecting the actual risk profile of the country. The country participates in regional Caribbean disaster risk frameworks and contributes tide gauge data to [[tsunami]] warning networks, but earthquake preparedness is not a significant national policy concern.

The Guiana Shield exposed in Suriname is geologically continuous with the formations in Guyana, French Guiana, and Venezuela, representing an Archaean craton — the Amazonian Craton — that formed between 3.5 and 1.5 billion years ago during multiple episodes of crustal growth and stabilisation. The ancient granites, gneisses, and greenstone belts of the interior highlands give way northward to the coastal plain, where Holocene river and marine sediments have accumulated over the old basement. The [[seismic-wave]] velocity structure of the old craton means that distant events are transmitted with relatively low attenuation across the region, explaining why large Andean and Caribbean events can occasionally be felt despite the lack of local seismic sources. Suriname's CELOS (Centre for Agricultural Research in Suriname) and regional meteorological service maintain limited seismological observation capability.

Suriname has a low level of seismic activity. Large earthquakes are infrequent but not impossible. A total of 0 earthquakes have been recorded in Suriname's seismic history.

Suriname has had 0 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.

Suriname is classified in the "Low" seismic zone, located in South America. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
