The Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) are a British Overseas Territory consisting of two island groups in the southern Bahamas, located north of Hispaniola and east of Cuba. The territory sits on the Turks Bank and the Caicos Bank — shallow carbonate platforms that are geologically part of the Bahama Platform — but lies in seismic proximity to one of the most hazardous [[fault]] systems in the Caribbean. The Septentrional Fault Zone, the major left-lateral strike-slip fault that traverses the northern coast of Hispaniola, approaches the TCI from the south and west; its eastern extension into the Mona Passage and the Muertos Trough region places significant seismic sources within reach. To the south, the North Hispaniola deformation zone and the Puerto Rico Trench represent the convergence zone of the North American and Caribbean plates. Seismic hazard in the TCI is considered moderate to high — higher than the stable Bahama Platform to the north but reflecting significant risk transmission from Hispaniola's active fault system.
The Turks and Caicos Islands' seismic history is shaped by their proximity to the Hispaniola fault system. Major earthquakes on the Septentrional Fault — which passes as close as 100–150 kilometres to the southern TCI — would transmit strong [[seismic-wave]] energy to the territory. The 12 January 2010 Haiti earthquake (magnitude 7.0) was felt in the Turks and Caicos, and the associated [[tsunami]] alert covered the territory. The 14 August 2021 Haiti earthquake (magnitude 7.2) in the southern peninsula was also felt throughout the region. Historically, major Hispaniola earthquakes dating back to the 1842 event (estimated M8.1) and earlier colonial-era events would have generated strong shaking at TCI. The territory also lies within the [[tsunami]] run-up zone for events on the Puerto Rico Trench to the southeast, which is capable of generating great subduction earthquakes and associated ocean-wide [[tsunami]]s affecting the entire northeastern Caribbean.
The Turks and Caicos Islands are built on Cretaceous carbonate platform rocks — the same geological package as the Bahamas — consisting of limestone, dolomite, and reef carbonates up to several kilometres thick, resting on older oceanic crust. The territory has no volcanic centres and no indigenous active faults of significance. The low-lying nature of most islands — the highest point is only about 49 metres — creates extreme [[tsunami]] inundation exposure across virtually the entire land surface of the lower islands. [[liquefaction]] in coastal carbonate sand under strong shaking is a possible secondary hazard. The territory's increasing development of tourism infrastructure along low-lying coasts amplifies economic exposure to both seismic and tsunami hazards. Seismic monitoring in the TCI is limited, relying on regional networks from Puerto Rico and the Bahamas.
