Uruguay is one of South America's most seismically stable countries, sitting on the Rio de la Plata Craton — a Proterozoic basement complex exposed along the southern coast — and covered elsewhere by younger sedimentary and volcanic sequences. The country sits entirely on the South American Plate interior, far from any active plate boundary, and the stresses transmitted from the Andean [[subduction-zone]] to the west are substantially attenuated before reaching Uruguayan territory. Rare intraplate events do occur, typically small-to-moderate earthquakes associated with reactivation of ancient basement fault zones. The Precambrian Uruguayan shield, exposed in the southern part of the country, is geologically similar to the Brazilian craton and shares its general seismic quiescence. The passive Atlantic margin to the east represents an ancient rifted boundary — opened when South America separated from Africa during the Cretaceous — that now hosts only very infrequent micro-seismicity. Uruguay's principal distant seismic influence comes from Andean events, which occasionally transmit [[seismic-wave]]s across the stable craton to produce weak felt motion in Montevideo.
The earthquake history of Uruguay is sparse, reflecting the genuine geological stability of the region. The country has no record of a destructive earthquake in its documented history. Occasional moderate events of magnitude 4–5 have been recorded in the basement terranes of southern Uruguay, including a notable swarm in the Piriápolis area in the 1990s. Argentina's San Juan and Mendoza earthquakes — particularly events of magnitude 7+ — are occasionally felt as gentle shaking in Montevideo and other Uruguayan cities due to efficient wave transmission through the craton. The 1944 San Juan earthquake (magnitude 7.4) and the 1977 San Juan earthquake (magnitude 7.4) both produced felt motion in Uruguay. No [[tsunami]] has affected Uruguay's Atlantic coast in its documented history, though very large Chilean or Argentine subduction events could theoretically generate South Atlantic waves with some residual height reaching the Río de la Plata estuary.
Uruguay's geology spans from the ancient basement of the Rio de la Plata Craton, consisting of Archean and Proterozoic metamorphic and granitic rocks exposed in the southern interior, to younger sedimentary basins in the north related to the Paraná intracratonic basin. The Dom Feliciano Belt — a Proterozoic orogen related to the final assembly of Gondwana — crosses Uruguay from north to south and represents a zone of ancient collision that created some pre-existing crustal weaknesses in the otherwise stable basement. These ancient structures are the most plausible source of the rare intraplate earthquakes documented in southern Uruguay. The sedimentary cover over the basement is geologically undeformed and relatively thin, providing little structural complexity for fault reactivation. Uruguay's DINAMIGE (national geological survey) maintains a small national seismological network and cooperates with regional monitoring agencies in Argentina and Brazil.

Earthquakes Near Major Cities in Uruguay
Uruguay has a low level of seismic activity. Large earthquakes are infrequent but not impossible. A total of 1 earthquakes have been recorded in Uruguay's seismic history.
The largest recorded earthquake in Uruguay had a magnitude of 4.7. Earthquakes of this size can cause significant damage depending on depth, location, and local building standards.
Uruguay has had 1 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.
Uruguay is classified in the "Low" seismic zone, located in South America. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
