The Pitcairn Islands comprise four volcanic islands — Pitcairn Island, Henderson Island, Ducie Atoll, and Oeno Atoll — in the remote south-central Pacific, situated on the Pacific Plate interior approximately 2,100 kilometres southeast of Tahiti. The islands were formed by the Pitcairn hotspot, which produced a chain of volcanic edifices as the Pacific Plate moved to the northwest over the mantle plume at approximately 70 millimetres per year. Pitcairn Island itself is an active or recently active volcanic island — its Adamstown settlement sits on a volcanic landscape with basaltic rocks and there is evidence of historical eruptive activity — while Henderson Island, a raised coral limestone platform, represents the older, subsided end of the same hotspot chain. The territory sits far from any active plate boundary; the nearest seismically active zone is the Chile-Peru subduction system approximately 3,500 kilometres to the southeast, and the nearest Pacific arc systems are the Tonga-Kermadec chain several thousand kilometres to the west.
Indigenous seismicity on the Pitcairn Islands is essentially absent, given the isolation of the islands on stable Pacific Plate interior with no active fault systems. Occasional minor volcanic-tectonic micro-seismicity may occur associated with residual magmatic activity beneath Pitcairn Island, but no significant locally generated earthquakes have been recorded in the islands' modern or historical record. The dominant seismic hazard is the [[tsunami]] generated by distant Pacific Rim events. The 1960 Chilean mega-earthquake ([[moment-magnitude]] 9.5) generated a Pacific-wide [[tsunami]] that traversed the entire ocean; given the Pitcairn Islands' position relatively close to the source on the Pacific scale, wave heights were likely 1 to 3 metres, though documentation for such a remote location is limited. The 2010 Chile earthquake ([[moment-magnitude]] 8.8) and 2015 Illapel earthquake ([[moment-magnitude]] 8.3) generated [[tsunami]] warnings for the Pitcairn Islands region. The 2022 Hunga Tonga [[tsunami]] reached the islands approximately 2.5 hours after the eruption.
The geology of the Pitcairn group reflects the classic Pacific hotspot island-to-atoll progression observed across the Pacific. Pitcairn Island, the youngest and most recently volcanically active, retains steep volcanic topography reaching 347 metres; Henderson Island, approximately 300 kilometres to the northeast and older, has been reduced by subsidence and wave erosion to a raised coral limestone platform 33 metres above sea level. Ducie and Oeno are low coral atolls on the oldest and most subsided end of the chain. The Pacific Plate beneath the Pitcairn region is Cretaceous to Paleogene in age, cold, rigid, and transmits [[seismic-wave]]s from distant sources efficiently. The [[p-wave]] and [[s-wave]] arrivals from Chilean and Peruvian megathrust events would register clearly on any sensitive [[seismograph]] placed on the islands, though the permanent population of fewer than 50 people means no permanent seismological instrumentation has been installed.
