Visión General Sísmica

South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands are British Overseas Territories in the Southern Ocean, forming the northernmost arc of the Scotia Arc — a complex curved plate boundary that connects the southern tips of South America and the Antarctic Peninsula. The South Sandwich Islands, specifically, sit on one of the most seismically and volcanically active island arcs in the Southern Ocean, where the South American Plate [[subduction-zone]] beneath the South Sandwich microplate generates frequent earthquakes and active volcanism. The islands include several active volcanoes — Zavodovski, Visokoi, Candlemas, Montagu, Bristol, and Saunders — all producing regular volcanic and volcano-tectonic earthquakes. South Georgia itself lies on the South Georgia microplate, removed from the most active subduction, but still within range of significant [[seismic-wave]] energy from the Scotia Arc system. The South Sandwich Trench, running along the eastern flank of the island arc, reaches depths of over 8,000 metres and represents the principal [[subduction-zone]] of this system.

The South Sandwich Islands region has produced some of the Southern Ocean's largest earthquakes in the modern instrumental era. The 3 June 1930 South Sandwich Islands earthquake (magnitude 7.9) and subsequent events in the 1960s and 1970s demonstrated the regular generation of large arc earthquakes in this remote location. More recently, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck the South Sandwich Islands in August 2021, generating a [[tsunami]] that was observed at tide gauge stations around the South Atlantic and Indian Ocean, including in South Africa and Brazil, though no significant inundation occurred on populated coastlines. The 2021 event reinforced awareness that even remote Southern Ocean subduction systems can generate transoceanic [[tsunami]]s. Continuous low-level seismicity from the South Sandwich volcanic arc is monitored by global seismological networks, and eruptions from the island volcanoes are periodically detected through remote sensing.

The tectonic origin of the Scotia Arc reflects the complex history of the connection between South America and Antarctica. The Scotia Arc represents a stretch of oceanic [[subduction-zone]] arc that formed as the South America-Antarctic plate margin evolved over the past 30 million years, partly driven by the opening of the Drake Passage between the continents. The Scotia Plate itself is a small oceanic microplate surrounded by transform faults (the North and South Scotia Ridges) and the active South Sandwich [[subduction-zone]] arc on its eastern side. South Georgia, unlike the South Sandwich Islands, is composed not of volcanic arc material but of accreted sedimentary and metamorphic rocks related to the Mesozoic Gondwana margin — making it geologically more similar to the Andean foothills than to typical oceanic island arcs. The South Sandwich Islands' volcanic chain is entirely oceanic arc material, built by magma generated from the subducting South American Plate slab beneath the small South Sandwich microplate.
