Christmas Island sits on the northeastern corner of the Indo-Australian Plate, approximately 360 kilometres south of the Java Trench — one of the world's most active [[subduction]] boundaries, where the Indian Ocean lithosphere dives northward beneath the Sunda Arc at rates of 60 to 70 millimetres per year. The island itself is geologically old and tectonically stable; it is a raised coral and phosphate platform sitting on oceanic basalt of Eocene age that has been elevated above sea level by flexural uplift near the subduction margin. While Christmas Island does not generate significant earthquakes from local fault structures, its proximity to the Java Trench places it within direct seismic influence of one of the world's most active megathrust systems. The [[subduction]] interface responsible for the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake — the Sunda megathrust — lies a few hundred kilometres to the northwest of the island, and the Java segment of the same interface is even closer to the north.

Christmas Island's most dramatic seismic experience in the modern era was the 26 December 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake ([[moment-magnitude]] 9.1–9.3), the third-largest earthquake ever recorded by [[seismograph]] instruments. The [[epicenter]] was approximately 900 kilometres northwest of Christmas Island, off northern Sumatra. The resulting [[tsunami]] struck Christmas Island with waves estimated at 2 to 7 metres, inundating the low-lying Flying Fish Cove settlement and the island's main jetty, causing significant structural damage, and resulting in at least one fatality. The Australian government upgraded the island's [[tsunami]] warning infrastructure following the 2004 disaster. Moderate earthquakes from the Java subduction system are felt periodically on the island, and [[seismic-wave]]s from large Sumatran interface events — including the March 2005 [[moment-magnitude]] 8.6 Nias earthquake and subsequent Sunda megathrust events — have produced felt shaking.

The geological character of Christmas Island reflects its position near the outer edge of the Indo-Australian Plate approaching the Java Trench. The island's basaltic basement, exposed at Flying Fish Cove and in mine workings, represents old oceanic crust of the Indian Ocean formed at the mid-ocean ridge system. This basement is capped by phosphate-rich deposits — the product of centuries of seabird guano accumulation on elevated coral limestone platforms — which supported extensive mining operations in the twentieth century. The island experiences mild flexural tilting as the oceanic plate bends downward approaching the trench to the north, and occasional seismic events up to magnitude 5 originate from within the flexing oceanic lithosphere. [[tsunami]] hazard from the Java subduction zone is classified as high, with the shortest warning times from the closest Java Trench segments potentially as little as 20 to 30 minutes, leaving limited evacuation time for low-lying coastal areas.
