Tinjauan Seismik

The Solomon Islands constitute one of the Pacific's most seismically active archipelagos, sitting at the intersection of the Pacific Plate, the Australian Plate, and the North Bismarck microplate in a zone of extraordinarily complex [[subduction-zone]] and transform tectonics. The primary seismic driver is the subduction of the Australian Plate and the Solomon Sea Plate beneath the North Bismarck microplate along the North Solomon Trench, which runs north of the main island chain. To the south, the San Cristobal Trench carries Pacific Plate material beneath the arc from the south. The convergence rates in this system reach 90 to 100 millimetres per year, among the highest in the Pacific, generating both large interface earthquakes and deep intraslab events. The volcanic arc is active, with Tinakula, Kavachi (submarine), and Vangunu calderas among the most active volcanic centres. The [[tsunami]] history of the Solomon Islands is extensive, with multiple events recorded in the modern era, and the combination of a rugged coastline with numerous inlets and bays creates complex [[tsunami]] wave focusing effects.

The Solomon Islands have experienced some of the largest earthquakes in the Pacific in the modern era. The 1 April 2007 Western Solomons earthquake (magnitude 8.1) generated a major [[tsunami]] with locally measured run-up heights exceeding 12 metres that struck Ghizo Island and surrounding areas; approximately 52 people were killed despite the relatively modest national death toll, and entire villages were destroyed on the west coast of Simbo Island. The 2 April 2007 [[tsunami]] arrived within minutes of the [[epicenter]] on the most affected coasts, leaving no time for warning. In 2010, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck near Rendova Island. The 6 February 2013 Santa Cruz earthquake (magnitude 8.0) killed 10 people and generated a locally destructive [[tsunami]] on Nendo Island in the Santa Cruz group. Multiple magnitude 7 earthquakes strike the Solomon Islands region virtually every year; the USGS catalogue for the region contains dozens of such events in any given decade. The 1977 Solomons earthquake (magnitude 8.1) was also a major event in this region.

The tectonic complexity of the Solomon Islands region is reflected in the geological diversity of the islands themselves. The main chain from Guadalcanal to Santa Isabel is built on accreted oceanic plateau material — specifically the Ontong Java Plateau, one of the world's largest oceanic igneous provinces — that was obducted onto the Pacific margin during the Cretaceous. Guadalcanal's basement consists of this plateau basalt, overlain by arc volcanic material and marine sediments. The more recent volcanic islands to the northwest, including Kolombangara and Simbo, are stratovolcanoes built on the active arc. The Santa Cruz group to the southeast has a somewhat different geological character, built primarily on arc volcanic and sedimentary sequences. [[liquefaction]] is a significant concern in the alluvial coastal plains of larger islands like Guadalcanal, where the capital Honiara is built on geologically young river deposits. [[aftershock]] sequences in the Solomon Islands region are typically numerous and can include multiple M6–7 events over periods of weeks to months.

Pertanyaan yang Sering Diajukan

Solomon Islands is located in a very high seismic risk zone, meaning earthquakes are frequent and can be destructive. A total of 31 earthquakes have been recorded in Solomon Islands's seismic history.

The largest recorded earthquake in Solomon Islands had a magnitude of 6.7. Earthquakes of this size can cause significant damage depending on depth, location, and local building standards.

Solomon Islands has had 31 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.

Solomon Islands is classified in the "Very High" seismic zone, located in Oceania. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
