Djibouti sits at one of the most extraordinary tectonic crossroads on Earth — the Afar Triple Junction, where three tectonic rifts converge: the East African Rift extending southward, the Red Sea spreading centre extending northwestward, and the Gulf of Aden spreading centre extending eastward. This triple junction geometry means that Djibouti is simultaneously being stretched in multiple directions as the African (Nubian) plate, the Somalian plate, and the Arabian plate each diverge from the common meeting point. The result is one of the highest natural seismicity rates in Africa, an active volcanic province, and some of the lowest-lying terrain on Earth — the Danakil Depression and the Afar Triangle dip more than 100 metres below sea level in places.

The Asal-Ghoubbet rift crisis of 1978 began on 7 November with a magnitude 5.3 earthquake that was felt across the country. Within hours, ground fissures had opened across the rift valley floor and a basaltic fissure eruption commenced at Ardoukoba, producing lava fountains and flows. The [[epicenter]] cluster associated with this sequence extended along the rift axis for approximately 15 kilometres. This event provided scientists with a rare opportunity to observe active continental rifting as it happened.

In 2000, an earthquake sequence near the Gulf of Tadjoura reached magnitude 5.7 and triggered minor landslides on the steep scarp faces of the rift walls.

The broader geological context of Djibouti includes the Afar Depression, a region where continental crust has been stretched and thinned to such an extent that true oceanic crust has begun to form in some places — the same process that created the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden over the past 30 million years. Djibouti is therefore a living laboratory for the study of continent-to-ocean transition.
