Egypt's seismic hazard arises from multiple distinct tectonic sources that surround the country on three sides: the Gulf of Suez rift to the southeast, the Red Sea spreading centre to the east, the Sinai Peninsula's complex fault network in between, and the Hellenic subduction arc to the north in the eastern Mediterranean. This variety of seismic sources means that different regions of Egypt face different types of hazard, from shallow crustal [[fault]] earthquakes in the Sinai to deep-focus events transmitted from the Hellenic Arc.
The Gulf of Suez represents an abandoned arm of the Red Sea rift system that was active from about 30 million years ago until approximately 5 million years ago, when extension shifted to the Red Sea axis. Although the Suez rift is no longer the primary plate boundary, it retains significant residual seismicity along its boundary faults. The [[epicenter]]s of many Egyptian earthquakes cluster along the Gulf of Suez coastline and beneath the northern Red Sea. The Dead Sea Transform fault system, which runs through Israel, Jordan, and the Sinai Peninsula, extends into the Gulf of Aqaba and represents an active strike-slip boundary between the Arabian and African (Nubian) plates.
The most devastating earthquake in Egypt's modern history struck on 12 October 1992, with a [[magnitude]] of 5.9. Although relatively moderate by global standards, the event's [[epicenter]] beneath the densely populated southern Cairo suburb of Dahshour produced intense shaking amplified by the soft alluvial soils of the Nile Delta and valley. The earthquake killed approximately 545 people, injured over 6,000, and left some 50,000 homeless, largely because of the poor construction quality of informal housing built on unstable alluvial ground. The disaster highlighted the role of [[liquefaction]] and soil amplification in converting moderate shaking into catastrophic collapse.
Historically, Egypt has experienced some of the most significant earthquakes in the ancient Mediterranean world. An earthquake in 365 CE that likely originated near Crete generated a [[tsunami]] that devastated Alexandria and much of the eastern Mediterranean coastline. Ancient records describe the near-complete destruction of the coastal city of Arsinoe during this event. A large earthquake near Nubia in 1955 with a magnitude of approximately 6.3 was felt across Upper Egypt. The eastern Mediterranean context of Egypt's northern border means that a recurrence of Hellenic Arc megathrust events — similar to the 365 CE event — would directly threaten the Egyptian coast with destructive tsunami waves.
Egypt's geological setting involves the northeast corner of the African (Nubian) plate, being separated from the Arabian plate along the Suez-Aqaba rift system. The Nile Delta and Valley are underlain by thick Cenozoic sedimentary sequences deposited by the ancient river, and these soft sediments dramatically amplify [[seismic-wave]]s from distant sources. The combination of relatively low natural seismicity, very high population density in the Nile corridor, and widespread poor construction practices creates a significant seismic risk concentrated in Cairo, Alexandria, and the Delta cities.
