French Polynesia encompasses an enormous maritime territory spanning approximately 5.5 million square kilometres of the south-central Pacific, encompassing five distinct archipelagos — the Society Islands, Tuamotu Archipelago, Marquesas, Austral Islands, and Gambier Islands — all sitting on the Pacific Plate interior. Like other Pacific hotspot island chains, French Polynesia does not sit on or near any active plate boundary and generates essentially no indigenous seismicity from local fault systems. The Society Islands hotspot — responsible for Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora, and the associated seamount chains — produced a classic age-progressive volcanic chain as the Pacific Plate moved to the northwest over the stationary hotspot mantle plume. Tahiti, the administrative centre, is geologically young (approximately 0.9 to 1.7 million years old) and sits directly over the active end of the hotspot, explaining its rugged volcanic topography rising to 2,241 metres at Mont Orohena.

The primary seismic hazard for French Polynesia is the [[tsunami]] generated by great earthquakes around the Pacific Rim, particularly from the Chile-Peru subduction system to the southeast. The 22 May 1960 Chilean mega-earthquake ([[moment-magnitude]] 9.5) generated a [[tsunami]] that struck French Polynesia with devastating effect: wave heights of 3 to 4 metres inundated coastal communities on the Tuamotu atolls and Marquesas Islands, killing at least two people and causing widespread damage. The 1946 Aleutian [[tsunami]] and the 1964 Alaska Good Friday [[tsunami]] also reached French Polynesia with recordable wave heights. The 15 January 2022 Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcanic [[tsunami]] reached French Polynesia approximately 2 hours after the eruption, with wave heights of 0.5 to 1.5 metres recorded at Papeete tide gauges and causing some coastal flooding in low-lying areas of the Tuamotus. The Tuamotu Archipelago — 77 low-lying coral atolls spread over an area the size of Western Europe — is particularly vulnerable given maximum elevations rarely exceeding 3 metres.

The tectonic context of French Polynesia places it in the deep interior of the Pacific Plate, one of the world's largest and most rigid lithospheric plates. The Tuamotu Plateau — the largest coral atoll chain in the world — represents a long-submerged volcanic edifice produced by the same hotspot system that currently produces the Society Islands, now carried northwest by Pacific Plate motion. The Pitcairn-Gambier hotspot chain to the southeast represents another distinct hotspot producing the Gambier Islands and associated seamounts. Occasional very minor intraplate seismicity has been recorded in French Polynesia, typically micro-events associated with magmatic activity beneath the active Mehetia seamount near Tahiti or stress concentration at old volcanic edifices. The Polynesian Seismological Laboratory (LDG) in Tahiti operates a regional seismological network and contributes to Pacific [[tsunami]] warning coordination.
