The island's central plateau — the former phosphate mining area — consists of a bare karst landscape of coral limestone pinnacles several metres tall. The surrounding coastal band of flatter ground, where most of the population lives, is closer to sea level and more vulnerable to [[tsunami]] inundation. No active faulting is documented beneath or near Nauru; the Pacific Plate in this area is among the oldest and most internally stable oceanic crust in any ocean basin.
