New Zealand sits astride one of the most geologically active plate boundaries on Earth, where the Pacific Plate and the Australian Plate meet in a complex and geometrically varied collision. The boundary changes character dramatically along its length: in the South Island, the two plates collide obliquely, driving up the Southern Alps along the Alpine Fault at a rate of approximately 27 millimetres per year — one of the fastest onshore strike-slip faults in the world. The collision here is transpressional, combining right-lateral strike-slip with convergence, and has built the Southern Alps from sea level to peaks over 3,700 metres in geologically recent time. In the North Island, the subduction geometry reverses: the Pacific Plate dives westward beneath the Australian Plate along the Hikurangi [[subduction-zone]] off the east coast, generating both interface megathrust hazard and the active volcanic arc of the Taupo Volcanic Zone. The transition between these two fundamentally different plate boundary styles occurs beneath Marlborough at the northern end of the South Island, creating the densely faulted Marlborough Fault System — including the Hope, Wairau, and Clarence faults — one of the most seismically active onshore zones in the country. Wellington, the national capital, sits directly on the active Wellington Fault.
The seismic history of New Zealand is both long and well-documented, reflecting centuries of Maori oral tradition and European scientific observation. The 1848 Marlborough earthquake (magnitude 7.5) and 1855 Wairarapa earthquake (magnitude 8.2) severely affected the Wellington region, with the Wairarapa event causing 15 metres of horizontal displacement and 6 metres of vertical uplift — among the largest documented strike-slip offsets in recorded history. Hawke's Bay was devastated by the 1931 Napier earthquake (magnitude 7.8), which killed 256 people and destroyed virtually the entire city of Napier; subsequent drainage of Ahuriri Lagoon by earthquake uplift added 40 square kilometres to the land area of the city. The 1987 Edgecumbe earthquake (magnitude 6.5) ruptured the Edgecumbe Fault in the Bay of Plenty. The 2010 Darfield earthquake (magnitude 7.1) struck near Christchurch in September with no fatalities, largely because it struck in the early morning; its [[aftershock]] sequence, however, included the catastrophic 22 February 2011 Christchurch earthquake (magnitude 6.2), which killed 185 people and caused widespread [[liquefaction]] of suburban soils built on Holocene river gravels and sands. The February 2011 event, though smaller, caused far greater damage because its [[epicenter]] was shallower and closer to the city. The 2016 Kaikōura earthquake (magnitude 7.8) ruptured at least 21 fault segments simultaneously in a complex multi-fault event that caused widespread landslides, uplifted coastlines by up to several metres, and briefly dammed rivers before partial clearing.
The tectonic framework of New Zealand reflects approximately 25 million years of convergent boundary evolution along the Pacific-Australian boundary. The land area of New Zealand is merely the visible portion of Zealandia — an 80 percent submerged continental fragment that rifted from eastern Gondwana approximately 80 million years ago. Zealandia's basement rocks, exposed in the Fiordland, Otago, and Nelson regions, include Permian to Jurassic metamorphic and igneous terranes accreted to the Gondwana margin during the Mesozoic. The current plate boundary bisects this ancient continental fragment, with the eastern part of the South Island sitting on the Pacific Plate and the western South Island on the Australian Plate. The Hikurangi [[subduction-zone]] is partially locked along its length, with the northern portion accumulating elastic strain at depth while the southern portion near Wellington may be creeping aseismically on some segments. Scientific debate about the recurrence interval and maximum [[magnitude]] of a Hikurangi interface megathrust event — potentially magnitude 8.5 to 9.0 — is among the most important ongoing questions in New Zealand seismology.
