Tinjauan Seismik

Niue is a single uplifted coral limestone island — the world's largest raised coral island — rising approximately 70 metres above sea level in the central South Pacific, situated on the Pacific Plate approximately 480 kilometres east of the Tonga Trench. This position places Niue significantly closer to the world's fastest [[subduction]] boundary than most Pacific island nations, and the seismic consequences are tangible. The Pacific Plate on which Niue sits is being consumed along the Tonga-Kermadec Trench at rates of 150 to 240 millimetres per year, the highest plate convergence rate on Earth, generating both shallow megathrust earthquakes along the interface and extremely rapid [[subduction]] that drives deep intraslab seismicity. Niue's elevated limestone platform — the result of a combination of hotspot swell uplift from the Louisville hotspot chain and tectonic uplift associated with proximity to the Tonga Trench — provides much better natural protection against [[tsunami]] inundation than flat atoll nations, but the island's steep coastal cliffs concentrate wave energy in notches and caverns.

The 29 September 2009 [[moment-magnitude]] 8.1 Samoa outer-rise earthquake, which devastated American Samoa and Samoa, also generated a [[tsunami]] that struck Niue. Wave heights at Niue were recorded at approximately 0.5 to 1 metre at the official tide gauge at Alofi harbour, but individual wave run-up in exposed coastal notches and on boulder beaches exceeded several metres in some locations. The elevated platform geology of Niue — with its vertical sea cliffs up to 30 metres high — provided protection to most of the island, though the harbour and a small number of coastal installations experienced damage. Previous [[tsunami]] impacts include effects from the 1960 Chilean earthquake ([[moment-magnitude]] 9.5) and regional Tonga-Kermadec events. The 2022 Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcanic [[tsunami]] also reached Niue, producing wave heights of approximately 0.5 to 1 metre. Large [[magnitude]] events from the Tonga system generate [[tsunami]] warnings for Niue with approximately 30 to 60 minutes of lead time.

The geology of Niue reflects a long history of coral carbonate platform growth on a volcanic basement that is now entirely submerged beneath hundreds of metres of limestone. The surface karst — pinnacles, sinkholes, caves, and makatea terrain — is characteristic of old raised coral platforms in the Pacific. The Louisville hotspot chain passes beneath the Pacific Plate in this region, and Niue's elevation is attributed partly to the dynamic uplift of the plate as it passes over the hotspot swell. The island's structural integrity as a raised limestone block means [[seismic-wave]] amplification effects are different from atoll nations — the stiff, competent rock transmits [[seismic-wave]]s with minimal amplification and provides stable ground for structures. [[liquefaction]] is not a hazard given the rock geology. Niue maintains [[tsunami]] evacuation plans based on moving inland and uphill rather than vertical structures, which is an option unavailable to low-lying atoll territories in the same region.

Pertanyaan yang Sering Diajukan

Niue has a low level of seismic activity. Large earthquakes are infrequent but not impossible. A total of 1 earthquakes have been recorded in Niue's seismic history.

The largest recorded earthquake in Niue had a magnitude of 4.9. Earthquakes of this size can cause significant damage depending on depth, location, and local building standards.

Niue has had 1 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.

Niue is classified in the "Low" seismic zone, located in Oceania. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
