Rwanda occupies a critical section of the western branch of the East African Rift System, sitting between Lake Kivu to the west — a major rift lake bounded by active normal [[fault]]s — and the Virunga volcanic massif to the north. This geographic position means Rwanda is exposed to two distinct types of seismic hazard: tectonic earthquakes from the rift faults along Lake Kivu, and volcanic earthquakes from the Virunga volcanoes (Nyiragongo, Nyamulagira, Karisimbi, Muhabura, Bisoke) just across the border in DRC.

The Lake Kivu Rift is one of the more seismically active sections of the western rift branch. The lake itself sits in a half-graben whose western boundary fault defines the escarpment separating Rwanda from eastern DRC. Moderate earthquakes of [[magnitude]] 5 to 6 have occurred repeatedly along this fault system. The 2008 Bukavu earthquake (M 5.9) and subsequent sequences were widely felt in Rwanda, particularly in Cyangugu (Rusizi) near the southern end of the lake.

The Virunga volcanic chain is geologically remarkable as one of the most active volcanic regions in Africa. Nyiragongo, which lies approximately 15 kilometres west of the Rwanda-DRC border, has a persistent lava lake and has erupted catastrophically multiple times. The January 2002 eruption sent lava flows to Goma, DRC, and the [[seismic-wave]] signals from this event were recorded across Rwanda. In May 2021, Nyiragongo erupted again, triggering rapid lava flow toward Goma and generating a swarm of earthquakes including events felt in Rubavu (Gisenyi) on the Rwandan side of the border.

Rwanda's capital Kigali lies on the central plateau, some distance from the main rift structures, but the country's small size means that significant events anywhere within the rift zone are felt nationally. A magnitude 5.0 earthquake in 2015 near Lake Kivu was felt across western Rwanda and caused alarm, though damage was limited.

The tectonic framework of Rwanda involves the separation of the Nubian and Somalian plates along the western rift branch, with extension accommodated by a combination of magmatic intrusion beneath the Virunga volcanic field and normal faulting along the rift margins. The [[epicenter]]s of instrumentally recorded events in Rwanda cluster along the Lake Kivu shoreline and near the Virunga volcanoes. The dense population of Rwanda — one of the most densely populated countries in Africa — combined with ongoing informal construction near the rift creates a significant seismic and volcanic risk exposure.
