Tinjauan Seismik
Samoa sits in the northern reach of the Tonga-Kermadec subduction system, with the Samoan archipelago positioned at the northern termination of the Tonga Trench where the Pacific Plate begins diving beneath the Australian and Tonga-Kermadec ridge system. The southern islands of Samoa are closest to this active [[subduction-zone]] boundary and experience the most seismicity. The Samoa Passage — the deep northern end of the Tonga Trench — transitions to a different plate boundary geometry east of Samoa, where the boundary between the Pacific and Australian plates follows a complex transform-spreading system rather than simple subduction. The Samoan volcanic hotspot — responsible for the volcanic islands of the archipelago — adds a layer of volcanic-tectonic seismicity distinct from the subduction seismicity to the south. The September 2009 earthquake and [[tsunami]] disaster demonstrated the catastrophic compound hazard at this tectonic junction.
On 29 September 2009, a magnitude 8.1 earthquake struck near the Tonga Trench-Samoa boundary, generating a devastating [[tsunami]] that struck both Samoa (independent) and American Samoa within 15 to 20 minutes of the event — far too quickly for any meaningful warning to reach coastal residents. The [[tsunami]] killed 189 people across Samoa (independent) and American Samoa combined; entire coastal villages were swept away, and run-up heights reached 14 metres in some sheltered bays. The earthquake mechanism was unusual — it involved an outer-rise normal-fault event triggered by the larger plate bending stresses as the Pacific Plate begins to flex downward at the trench, a type rarely associated with [[tsunami]] generation, which may have contributed to the underestimation of [[tsunami]] danger. The event prompted major revisions to tsunami awareness and vertical evacuation planning across the Pacific island nations. Samoa also experiences volcanic seismicity from the Savai'i hotspot: Savai'i is the most recent Samoan volcano to erupt on land, with eruptions in 1902 and 1905.
The Samoan islands were formed as the Pacific Plate passed over the Samoa hotspot, creating a chain of progressively older islands and submerged seamounts to the northwest. The active volcanic centres remain above sea level to the west, with Savai'i being the youngest and largest island. Geological mapping shows that lava flows from the 1902–1905 eruptions on Savai'i destroyed two villages and much forest on the island's northwest. The proximity of the hotspot to the northern termination of the Tonga subduction system creates a complex thermal and mechanical interaction between hotspot volcanism and subduction tectonics. The [[subduction-zone]] slab in the Samoa area shows complex geometry at depth, and deep intraslab earthquakes within the descending Pacific Plate at depths of 200–600 kilometres below Samoa have been documented. [[aftershock]] sequences from major events, including the 2009 sequence, can persist for months and include M6+ events.

Samoa has a moderate level of seismic activity. Significant earthquakes occur periodically. A total of 30 earthquakes have been recorded in Samoa's seismic history.
The largest recorded earthquake in Samoa had a magnitude of 6.3. Earthquakes of this size can cause significant damage depending on depth, location, and local building standards.
Samoa has had 30 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.
Samoa is classified in the "Moderate" seismic zone, located in Oceania. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
