Burkina Faso occupies the interior of the West African craton, a block of ancient Precambrian basement that has been geologically inert for over a billion years. The country lies well away from active plate boundaries and major rift systems, and its natural seismicity is extremely low. Instrumental networks detect only scattered micro-earthquakes, and no event exceeding [[magnitude]] 4.5 has been reliably documented within Burkina Faso's borders in the modern instrumental record.
The West African craton consists largely of Archean granitoid and greenstone belt rocks flanked by Proterozoic sedimentary basins. In Burkina Faso, these ancient rocks crop out extensively across the Mossi Plateau. The country is remote from the East African Rift to the east and from the Atlas collision zone to the north. The far-field stress transmitted through the African plate from the Africa-Eurasia convergence is the dominant influence on any seismic activity, but this stress dissipates rapidly across the cold, thick lithosphere of the craton interior.
Historical seismic records in Burkina Faso are essentially blank. No earthquake has been documented in the country's history that caused structural damage or casualties.
