Flood and earthquake insurance are separate policies with different rules. Understand which natural disasters are covered and where gaps exist.
Two Disasters, Two Entirely Separate Policies
One of the most dangerous misconceptions in property insurance is the assumption that a single policy covers all natural disasters. In reality, the U.S. insurance system separates earthquake and flood coverage into entirely distinct products, administered by different entities, under different federal frameworks, and with different claim processes. Understanding this distinction before a disaster occurs can prevent catastrophic financial outcomes.
Standard homeowners insurance explicitly excludes both flood and earthquake damage. To be protected against either, you must purchase separate coverage. They need separate NFIP flood coverage, or a private flood policy, to be protected against this specific scenario.
The Tsunami Coverage Gap

The Cascadia Subduction Zone could generate tsunamis affecting coastal communities from northern California to British Columbia. Soil-Related Damage: The Gray Area

Private flood insurance, offered by a growing number of carriers, may offer better pricing for lower-risk properties.
Earthquake insurance premiums vary far more than flood insurance premiums, ranging from $100 per year in low-risk states to $4,000+ per year for high-value California homes.
