Historically, the most significant earthquake to affect Liechtenstein was the 1356 Basel earthquake (estimated M 6.9), centered about 120 km to the southwest, which caused widespread destruction across the Alpine foreland and would have produced strong shaking in the Rhine Valley area. In the modern era, moderate Alpine and Rhine Graben events — such as the 1978 Freiburg earthquake and various events in northwestern Switzerland — are regularly felt in the principality.
