Moldova lies on the southwestern edge of the East European Platform, positioned between the stable Precambrian basement to the northeast and the active Carpathian orogen to the west. The country has very low indigenous seismicity, but it occupies a critical position as a receiver of strong [[seismic-wave|seismic waves]] from one of the most unusual earthquake sources in Europe: the Vrancea intermediate-depth seismic zone in the Eastern Carpathians of Romania, located approximately 200–400 km to the west and southwest.

The Vrancea zone generates earthquakes at depths of 70–180 km — far deeper than typical crustal events — and these deep shocks radiate energy efficiently across the stable East European Platform, producing strong to very strong [[intensity|shaking]] in Moldova despite the intermediate distances involved. The 1977 Vrancea earthquake (Mw 7.4, depth ~94 km) caused severe damage in Chișinău and killed approximately 125 people in Moldova; it also killed over 1,500 in Romania. The 1940 (Mw 7.7) and 1986 (Mw 7.1) Vrancea earthquakes were also strongly felt throughout Moldova. Locally generated Moldovan earthquakes are rare and inconsequential, but the country must plan for recurrent strong shaking from Vrancea events on a decadal timescale. Moldova has incorporated Vrancea hazard into its national building codes and emergency preparedness plans.

Earthquakes Near Major Cities in Moldova

Moldova has a low level of seismic activity. Large earthquakes are infrequent but not impossible. A total of 0 earthquakes have been recorded in Moldova's seismic history.

Moldova has had 0 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.

Moldova is classified in the "Low" seismic zone, located in Europe. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
