France's seismic hazard is moderate overall but varies dramatically by region. The French Alps concentrate the highest earthquake activity: the Belledonne, Briançonnais, and Mercantour massifs host active reverse and strike-slip [[fault]] systems producing the largest events, with [[magnitude]] 5–6 earthquakes occurring every few decades. The Pyrenees represent a second major source zone, with activity concentrated along the North Pyrenean Fault and related structures. Southeastern France, particularly the Provence region and the Arles–Nîmes corridor, has also produced damaging historical earthquakes. The Rhine Graben forms the eastern seismic source zone, shared with Germany and Switzerland. In contrast, the Paris Basin, the Massif Central interior, and Brittany experience very low seismicity.
The most damaging French earthquake in modern history was the 1909 Lambesc event (M 6.2) in Provence, which killed 46 people and destroyed hundreds of buildings in the Salon-de-Provence and Lambesc area. The 1756 Düren earthquake (felt strongly in Alsace, M ~6.0) and the 1564 Digne earthquake (M estimated ~6.5) in the Alps represent significant historical events. The 1980 Irpinia earthquake in Italy — felt strongly in southeastern France — demonstrated that Ligurian events can have cross-border effects. The French Antilles islands (Guadeloupe, Martinique) experience extreme seismicity from the Lesser Antilles subduction arc, representing by far the highest seismic hazard in any French territory.
France's tectonic setting reflects its position between three major compressional systems: the Alps to the east (Africa–Eurasia collision), the Pyrenees to the south (Iberian block), and the passive margin of the Atlantic to the west. Residual compression from the Alpine and Pyrenean orogeny, combined with extensional tectonics in the Rhine and Rhône rift systems, creates a diverse [[fault]] network. France applies Eurocode 8 seismic provisions, with the national hazard map dividing the territory into five seismic zones. The RESIF network of seismic stations provides dense coverage, and France is an active contributor to pan-European earthquake monitoring.

Earthquakes Near Major Cities in France
Sıkça Sorulan Sorular
France has a moderate level of seismic activity. Significant earthquakes occur periodically. A total of 0 earthquakes have been recorded in France's seismic history.
France has had 0 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.
France is classified in the "Moderate" seismic zone, located in Europe. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
