Seismic Overview
France's seismic hazard is moderate overall but varies dramatically by region. The 1756 Düren earthquake (felt strongly in Alsace, M ~6.0) and the 1564 Digne earthquake (M estimated ~6.5) in the Alps represent significant historical events. The 1980 Irpinia earthquake in Italy — felt strongly in southeastern France — demonstrated that Ligurian events can have cross-border effects. The French Antilles islands (Guadeloupe, Martinique) experience extreme seismicity from the Lesser Antilles subduction arc, representing by far the highest seismic hazard in any French territory.
