Afghanistan occupies one of the world's most seismically dangerous positions, straddling the convergence zone where the Indian Plate pushes northward into Eurasia at roughly 40 millimetres per year. The country's seismicity is dominated by the Hindu Kush seismic zone in the northeast, which produces some of the deepest and most powerful intermediate-depth earthquakes on Earth — events occurring between 100 and 300 kilometres depth where the cold, descending lithosphere of the Indian Plate is still capable of brittle failure. The Main Karakoram Thrust, Herat Fault, and Chaman [[fault]] system are the principal active structures controlling shallow seismicity across the country. The Herat Fault in the northwest is a major right-lateral strike-slip system that runs for over 800 kilometres.
Afghanistan's recorded seismic history is defined by repeated catastrophe. The 1998 Takhar earthquakes (magnitude 6.1 and 6.9) killed more than 5,000 people in the remote northeastern highlands. In October 2005, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake centred in adjacent Pakistan but strongly felt across eastern Afghanistan killed over 86,000 people regionally. The 2002 Hindu Kush earthquake sequence produced a magnitude 7.4 event that caused extensive damage. More recently, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck Paktika Province in June 2022, killing more than 1,000 people in mud-brick villages with minimal earthquake resistance. The death tolls in Afghanistan's earthquakes are disproportionately high because traditional construction using unreinforced mud brick and dry-stone masonry collapses catastrophically even under moderate [[intensity]] shaking.
The tectonic framework beneath Afghanistan is extraordinarily complex. The Pamir Plateau to the north forms one of the world's highest and most geologically active orogenic plateaus, created by the indentation of the Indian Plate into Asia. The Hindu Kush range marks a zone where oceanic or transitional lithosphere is being subducted nearly vertically into the mantle, producing the characteristic intermediate-depth seismicity that generates [[seismic-wave]]s felt across a vast region. The Chaman Fault, running along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, is the dominant plate boundary structure in the south, accommodating left-lateral slip of approximately 25–30 millimetres per year. Collision-related thrust faults throughout central and northern Afghanistan create hazard even in areas far from the main plate boundary. The [[epicenter]] depth distribution clearly shows the transition from shallow crustal faulting in the south to the deep Hindu Kush seismic zone in the northeast.

Earthquakes Near Major Cities in Afghanistan
Afghanistan is located in a high seismic risk zone, meaning earthquakes are frequent and can be destructive. A total of 0 earthquakes have been recorded in Afghanistan's seismic history.
Afghanistan has had 0 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.
Afghanistan is classified in the "High" seismic zone, located in Asia. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
