Taiwan occupies one of the world's most tectonically active settings, positioned at the transition between two opposing subduction systems. In the north, the Philippine Sea Plate subducts northward beneath the Eurasian Plate along the Ryukyu Trench. In the south, the Eurasian Plate subducts eastward beneath the Philippine Sea Plate along the Manila Trench. In central Taiwan, these two subduction systems are separated by a direct arc-continent collision where the volcanic arc of the Luzon Arc impinges against the Chinese continental margin. This collision has built the Central Mountain Range — Taiwan's spectacular spine of peaks over 3,000 metres — through ongoing thrust faulting and crustal shortening at roughly 70–80 millimetres per year, one of the world's fastest continental convergence rates. The Longitudinal Valley Fault, Chelungpu Fault, and dozens of other active [[fault]] systems cut through this densely populated island.
Taiwan's seismic history is extraordinary in its frequency and intensity. The 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake (magnitude 7.6) on the Chelungpu Fault killed 2,415 people, injured 11,305, and caused surface rupture of 100 kilometres with vertical offset of up to 8 metres near Chelungpu village. The event was transformative for earthquake engineering globally, providing the largest collection of near-fault strong-motion records ever obtained. [[aftershock]] sequences following Chi-Chi included multiple magnitude 6+ events. The 1906 Meishan earthquake (magnitude 7.1), the 1935 Hsinchu-Taichung earthquake (magnitude 7.1), and the 1941 Chungpu earthquake (magnitude 7.1) each caused over 2,000 deaths. The 2016 Tainan earthquake (magnitude 6.4) killed 117 people, most in the collapse of a single residential tower. The 2024 Hualien earthquake (magnitude 7.4) killed 13 people and caused dramatic building collapses in Hualien city, but Taiwan's extensive preparedness limited casualties. Approximately 18,000 earthquakes of all sizes are recorded in Taiwan annually.
The tectonic architecture of Taiwan reflects the full complexity of an ongoing arc-continent collision. The eastern Coastal Range, composed of andesitic volcanic rocks, represents the remnant of the Luzon Arc that has been accreted to Taiwan as the Manila Trench subduction zone migrates southward. The Longitudinal Valley between the Coastal Range and the Central Mountain Range marks the active suture zone where the Philippine Sea Plate is currently colliding with and underthrusting the Eurasian Plate's continental margin. GPS measurements across Taiwan show convergence of 80 mm per year in the southeast, decreasing northward as the subduction transitions to extension near the Okinawa Trough back-arc spreading system. The western plain of Taiwan, built on river sediments from the rising mountains, sits above blind thrust faults capable of generating magnitude 7+ earthquakes with little surface warning. Taiwan's [[early-warning]] system, dense seismic network, and strict building codes have been hard-won lessons from devastating historical events, and the country is considered one of the world leaders in earthquake preparedness. [[seismic-wave]] analysis from Taiwan's dense network has contributed enormously to global understanding of fault mechanics and source physics.

Earthquakes Near Major Cities in Taiwan
Taiwan is located in a very high seismic risk zone, meaning earthquakes are frequent and can be destructive. A total of 74 earthquakes have been recorded in Taiwan's seismic history.
The largest recorded earthquake in Taiwan had a magnitude of 5.6. Earthquakes of this size can cause significant damage depending on depth, location, and local building standards.
Taiwan has had 74 recorded earthquakes. This count includes events of all magnitudes detected by seismic monitoring networks. The actual number of earthquakes may be higher, as smaller events can go undetected.
Taiwan is classified in the "Very High" seismic zone, located in Asia. Seismic zones indicate the relative level of earthquake hazard based on historical activity, geological conditions, and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries.
